How white IS this school?

Hi guys,

So I’m thinking about applying as a freshman next year, my moms friend loved Elon and I liked it when I visited, but I’m not with the diversity. Elon’s website says 20% of students are people of color but every other website I’ve been to has contested that. I really don’t want a school that’s almost exclusively rich republican white kids…any advice?

More middle class than rich, some international, and some Hispanic.

I would guess Republicans are a minority

Elon University is mainly white, although there is still a little over 20% of students that are from different racial/ethnic backgrounds. It tends to be more middle class than rich. Good amount of international students here, as well as students from almost all the states (still missing North Dakota LOL - PSA if you are from North Dakota please come!!) There’s a ton of different religious groups and clubs, and it still feels very diverse since people have so many different interests and backgrounds. There’s even a hispanic sorority, a jewish fraternity, and clubs for women of color. As for political standing, it’s about 50/50. Most people say they’re moderate and don’t identify with a certain party, and then the rest are split liberal and conservative. You have to factor in that the majority of students come from the Northeast, so you get both democrats and republicans from up there as well.

Actually there are a lot of rich students. There was this NY Times article a while back where you can see how many students have families in the top 1 %. Elon was way up there. It’s also very white, but I don’t know if they are all Republicans. I’d guess that it’s a mix.

We toured not that long ago and the admissions rep said actually 18% minority.

That stat from admissions likely includes students from the Elon Campus in nearby Greensboro, where the demographics are the opposite of the main campus. The primary campus is very white and affluent.

Elon is predominantly white but not for a lack of trying. Many minorities visit and don’t come because it’s not diverse enough. My S is a Jr and involved in many of the diverse organizations and says “we’re trying.” It’s a great school and as those have said, a mix of politics. Everyone is super friendly and helpful but needs more work in the diversity sector.

Google the Common Data set to see specifics.

I just looked up that article and don’t see Elon mentioned at all.

We toured last year and kiddo’s takeaway was that it was filled with preppy, rich white kids. So even if stats say otherwise, that doesn’t mean the perception isn’t real.
