Appropriating Gandhi to justify the behavior of some rampaging football players is a microaggression.
…" the behavior of some rampaging football players " What is rampaging about the subject students here? Please clarify
Umm…let me just go down the list. I haven’t heard of the “freshman” thing, and I don’t see what difference it makes regardless. Israel does commit human rights abuses. Christians are still the majority in this country, and they are not being discriminated against. I’ve never heard of the Catholic thing either. If identifying as a certain gender makes someone happy, I don’t see why you should care. Maybe try to find better justification for your bigotry? If certain fraternities and sorroritites are engaging in racist recruitment practices, throwing slurs at various groups, and being tied to rape allegations, I’d be sensitive too. Obviously this isn’t all Greek Life, but the unsavory behavior of many members has been well documented. Literally none of this links into the topic.
You seem to have a distaste for the current generation and think that they’re soft. I’d suggest looking at the issue again and changing your perceptions. Hating discrimination and mistreatment is not a sign of SJW action or a soft generation. Isn’t a move towards more general civil rights a good thing? (Note: I don’t support the chaos at Yale, and I’m ambivalent at best)
Students riot over athletic events!
I have no problem with peaceful political protest by students. It suggests that they are aware of their responsibilities and duites as citizens. I little understand the wanton vandalism that occurs aroun victories and losses by sports teams. I don’t think I even want to try to understand how privileged adults can care so much about local, profit-driven events given all the issues in the world. It most be some sort of mass displacement.
Give me poltical correctness any day.

The 1950 group surrounded the car of the president during the homecoming parade, preventing it from moving. This qualifies as criminal false imprisonment, and if he reasonably feared an unwanted touching assault. False inprisonment is actually a far worse crime than assault. And while it wasn’t a criminal assault, he suffered a verbal assault outside a Kansas City fundraiser (and if he reasonably feared that he might be touched, it was a criminal assault). Why? Because some unknown person in a pickup yelled a racial slur at the BLACK student body president, and someone drew a swastika in feces on a bathroom wall. Clearly an overwhelmingly white campus that elects a black student body president is just chock full of racists.
This college president had nothing to do with any of this. Since the expectation is that all of white America should grovel before blacks on demand, he is now apologizing for not getting out of his car during the homecoming parade and “engaging” with the students. What a crock of crapola!

I agree with others that it seems to vary from school to school.
I had never even heard of the SJW scene until I joined CC. Where I went to college, the SJW drama simply didn’t exist… Students got along, and went about their everyday lives. Male, female, black, white, gay, straight, it just didn’t matter. It wasn’t this competitive PC culture that you see at many schools now.
Sometimes, when I look way back on my college days, I think it just seemed to me like everyone got along and went about their everyday lives.
“Clearly an overwhelmingly white campus that elects a black student body president is just chock full of racists.”
Well, this country elected a black president twice and it seemed to drag the racists out from the holes we had all hoped they’d have crawled into.
Btw, that “expectation that whites should grovel before blacks at all times” is rather uncalled-for. Maybe that’s what they think in backwards parts of the country at KKK rallies.
What Pizzagirl said.
Moreover, I can guarantee that not every eligible student voted in the ASB election, at Mizzou or any other large campus. If you know of one, feel free to let me know.
@EarlVanDorn Again, it wasn’t just two incidents, there have been at least 4 reported incidents this semester and this, while it has become centered on race, originally included other issues as well. And people aren’t just unhappy with Wolfe now; there have been issues on campus for a while (before I got here, so I can’t claim to know about those incidents) and his lack of communication. Additionally, you act like this is some small protests…this is big, very big. Missouri lawmakers are commenting, the House Democrats are calling for Wolfe to step down, today begins two days of grad student walkouts. You don’t have to agree with the protestors, that’s your right, but you definitely don’t understand everything that’s occurred here.
Also, while the students blocked Wolfe’s car, it hit a student twice (not hard enough to be harmed, but still). Doesn’t that qualify as assault too?
Blocking the president’s car is still uncalled for. Act like grow ups and make an appointment to meet someone in his/her office. Don’t block the path of a car. Clue-it makes you seem like a thug.
Agree that the parade was probably not the right time nor place to voice grievances.
Agree with you generally about that, Pizzagirl, but I think calling the protestors ‘thugs’ is overboard. Was their conduct ‘not very bright’ or obnoxious? Sure.
I didn’t call them thugs. I said that blocking a car makes them seem like thugs. I selected my words carefully.
The Mizzou president resigned. Do with that on this thread what you will.
The car inched forward and indeed touched a student. It becomes a matter of rights. Did the car have a right to be in the street moving forward? Yes. Did the student have the right to be in the street illegally blocking traffic and falsely inprisoning the college president? No. Therefore no assault.
I am aware that there have been three “incidents” listed in news stories, the feces swastika and two incidents of shouted racial slurs. I think it’s terrible that people would do that. But if whites were to run riot every time so white person was harassed by a black then we would never have any peace. I find it pretty disgusting that the president of the university is now groveling like an abused puppy over all of this. A lot of people are creating a racial situation out of this because Missouri has had to make some budget cuts, so the left-wing faculty is all to willing to join in. The university needs to just pull the scholarships of the striking football players, fire the coach and athletic director, and make it plain that no one is going to get special treatment.
“You mention these politicians, but most of these Democrats supported the Ferguson rioters and the burning and looting of that city.”
Unless you can identify and confirm such alleged “support,” your statement is libel.
“Appropriating Gandhi to justify the behavior of some rampaging football players is a microaggression”
@sorghum – nothing micro about it. Just putting the events at Mizzou into the larger historical context they deserve. I say bravo to the players, and the coaches who stood by them. In terms of civil rights struggle in this country, this is a major accomplishment.
For what it’s worth, the situation at Yale is highly controversial on campus, and everybody is talking about it. It’s certainly true that most students there are pretty liberal, but a lot of them also don’t approve of what they perceive to be bad behavior and overreaction. But I’ve noticed that it doesn’t tend to calm things down to tell people that they are overreacting.
Always enjoy threads where straight white men like me complain bitterly and with great hyperbole about the horrible oppression they face in the modern world.
Usually I have to go to Yahoo or FreeRepublic dot com to get my fill of the whining. Thanks everyone for saving me from the trouble!
