I know a lot of people do some nice summer enrichment activities, like internships, volunteering, college summer programs, etc. How do mine compare?

Every year my family goes to Taiwan for almost two months (cause you know, that's where we come from), This means I basically can't do any of those college summer things because I'm not there. But, my dad has me intern at his company. It's a small company that he started.

How will colleges view this?

So not only do you let colleges control the classes you take, but you're spending your summers trying to fill them with admissions-officer-approved "enrichment activities"???

It's SUMMERTIME. For God's sakes. Do something fun that you want to do and NOT because a guy in a conference room in Boston or somewhere thinks you should.

Heh, you think I won't be having fun over there?

Honestly, the title is sort of misleading. It should be "Will colleges hate these summer activities?". I'm simply worried about whether I'm missing opportunities that others have.

Will they hate them? No. I can't imagine that they'd be bad, at all. If anything, they'll be looked on favorably. "This is a committed kid," they might say, "and his work ethic is impressive."

I just don't think you should plan your summer based on how it will look to a college, that's all. I'm glad you will have fun though.

Sounds pretty good to me. Internship could be interesting work experience, and you can play up the travel as a unique cultural experience. Cheers.

There are plenty of kids who don't do summer college enrichment--colleges don't expect it. Plenty of kids need to work over the summer or have other plans. Honestly, colleges will like your internship and trip to Taiwan just as much if not more than those programs. You are showing that you are committed and dedicated and can hold down a job/intership. I mean, if you were literally sitting around and doing nothing, that would be less impressive, but as it is, you are doing quite a lot and colleges will appreciate that.

Have a good summer! :)

As long as you're doing something over the summer, it's fine. Pump gas. It builds character.

at least you're doing something and not home watching Friends all the time!

Trust me, I barely did anything during my summers in high school - much less had an internship or traveled internationally! - and I still got into some great schools. Enjoy your summer!
