How will FAFSA work -- Parent just got laid off...

My dad was making 100k a year last year but just last month he got laid off...He has had money troubles since a divorce 3 years ago...so never had any $$ to help me out with.

I am transferring to ASU in the Fall this year...Do you guys think I have any chance at getting any grants when I file FAFSA? Last year I didn't qualify for anything at all (obviously...)

Anybody else in a similar situation?

Thanks,
Robert

I hope you’re not Out of State for ASU. If so, don’t expect much (if any) help. ASU doesn’t usually give it’s own aid to OOS students and transfer students don’t usually get good scholarships.

As for the lay-off. Schools assume that someone who has been recently laid off will soon find another job.

Your FAFSA won’t change since it’s based on 2009 earnings, which haven’t changed. I don’t think publics really make much in adjustments when parents get laid off.

What is your home state? If it’s not AZ, then I think you need to rethink this transfer. How much is ASU going to cost?

I am going to be getting a $9k scholarship to ASU (hopefully of course) which will bring the cost lower than going to any UC school. I am in California.

Thank you for the response. I guess I will be out of luck for at least this semester. I’m not sure if he will manage to find a job in the short term as most of his profession-related jobs are all tied up and those who lost their jobs are still looking 1+ year later. knocks on wood…

^^^

Which $9k scholarship is given to transfer students? Is that a dept scholarship of a university scholarship.

What will you do if you don’t get this scholarship?

Did you apply to any Cal States or UCs? Did you apply to any that you can commute to?

If you get the scholarship, how will you pay the rest of the costs (which will be about $20k per year)?

Contact the financial aid office at ASU, specifically your counselor. Explain the situation and ask them to re-evaluate your FAFSA noting your dad as a displaced worker. It is usually called a “request for consideration of special circumstances” or something like that. I am in the same situation, and it decreased my EFC by 50%. I am waiting to see how it affects my financial aid offers because most of my schools dont release final aid/scholarship offers until April 1. It is certainly worth a phone call.
BTW, my schools consist of 2 OOS public, 1 instate private and 1 instate public. 3 of the 4 counselors I spoke to were interested in trying to help, and all 3 put my packet up for review including the lesser EFC.

^^^

How long has your dad been laid off? Many schools will not give displaced worker status until the parent has been laid off for a bit.

Which OOS publics did you apply to? Are you an incoming freshman? Do you have highish stats? All of these things can play into how cooperative a school can be. It’s not just a simple…my dad was just laid off, he’s now a displaced worker, so my EFC gets cuts in half and I get more aid.

I am an incoming freshman with 2000 SAT, 30 ACT, GPA 3.6 UW, mod ECs and comm service, top 10%. I live in Fl. I have been accepted to Ga Tech, Valdosta State, Va Tech, Texas Tech, Auburn, Embry-Riddle, Jacksonville University and University of Central Florida. I am graduating from an engineering magnet high school, and will be going into Aerospace Eng. So far only Valdosta State has declined to review my FAFSA/financial aid. My fathers business is construcion based which continues to be hit hard in Fl. I dont know how much or any it will change my financial offers, but my EFC changed from 23000 to 11000. Each school can choose what special circumstances are and how to deal with the situation. I do know it cant hurt to ask, especially if you really want to attend that school or are a very high student for their incoming class.

I do know it cant hurt to ask, especially if you really want to attend that school or are a very high student for their incoming class.

Yes, that’s true… However, the OP is a transfer student, and that doesn’t bode well for an improved FA consideration.

It sounds like you were able to show that your dad’s business has been in decline for more than just a month or two. That can be a different situation. Recent layoffs are often considered “temporary,” with schools assuming that new job will be found soon. Schools don’t want to “jump thru hoops” to give new EFCs or more aid only to have the parents resume working within weeks.

It is a $9k scholarship for socal comm college students who have a 3.5gpa or above and qualify. I had 3 of my friends qualify last year and my GPA is better than 2 of them, so I shouldn’t have any issues getting it as long as I get accepted to the school. knock on wood

I currently go to UCI, but I just don’t like the school.

$20k tuition? Out of state tuition is $20k, minus $9k = $11k a year. Same as I paid for UCI last year.
I won’t be going until the Fall and my dad got laid off 3 weeks ago, so he would have been laid off 5-6 months before school begins.

If you’re coming from UC Irvine, why would you qualify for a scholarship for community college students?

I’ve found the ASU financial aid people to be very helpful via email – harder to get through to an actual financial aid officer on the phone, especially right now.

I don’t think that scholarship is for transfers from 4 year colleges…I think it’s an agreement with CC transfers. Were your friends from CC’s or 4 year universities?

BTW…I said … "If you get the scholarship, how will you pay the rest of the costs (which will be about $20k per year)? "

I didn’t say the TUITION would be $20k per year after scholarship; I said…how will you pay the rest of the costs which will be about $20k per year. If you get the scholarship, you’ll owe $11k for tuition plus about 9K in room, board, books, etc.

You can’t commute…so your costs will be about $20k per year IF you get the scholarship.

What don’t you like about UCI…it’s a much higher ranked school than ASU.
What will you do if you don’t get the scholarship?

BTW…where is that scholarship on the ASU website? ASU reduced/eliminated a lot of scholarships this last year. Does it still exist?

I am still taking classes @ my Comm College (Math) so “technically” I am transferring from there. I have no units to carry over from UCI so its redundant…I’m not sending any transcripts from UCI. I think it was a mistake not to go to ASU straight after I got my IGETC…but I just didn’t feel ready to move state. It was happening too fast and I wasn’t ready for it. I’ve accepted my mistake the $$ it has cost me, but it’s time to move on. You only live once.

They are friends from HS and I will be rooming /w them for cheap.

I just don’t like the atmosphere. It’s a commuter school and I don’t want that. I’m not meeting people or making friends and it really sucks. I feel like my happiness is more important. ASU’s business school has some great opportunities and the majors are more in line with my academic goals over the lack of business-related majors offered at uci.

If I don’t get the scholarship I’ll just work for 6months at my job and apply again for the Spring. I have plenty going on in my life and in no real rush although obviously I would love to get it and go. I’m getting both my cars up to speed so I won’t have any mechanical issues when I move and my current job here is management, so I make enough.

So you are attending CC and then UCI for fun? Have you paid for UCI? If so you have to send that transcript. Will you get grades from them?

Don’t transfers from CCs have to have a certain number of credits in order to get the scholarship?

BTW…where is this scholarship on their webpage?

Transfer Merit Grant Program
[california community college student | transfer.asu.edu](http://transfer.asu.edu/communitycollege/CA/general)

As I said, last year my friends got it. < 3.5 = $7k, =>3.5 = $9k
They are waiting on this years budget…so we will see what happens #-wise.

My backup plan if it does not work out is to take a year off and get some IT certificates such as Cisco and MSCE.

It’s a long story with UCI…partially they messed up, partially I did. In short I won’t have any units at all. I was only there for 1 quarter so I won’t be sending any transcripts as there is nothing on them.

Did you use financial aid to pay for your time at UCI or was it out of pocket?

I used aid just for the tuition, paid everything else myself. I don’t have the pocket to foot it all unfortunately, nor do my family. I’m on my own!
I was working 35hrs/week taking 16 units… :frowning: Absolute hell and never again.

Are you aware that transfer scholarships are for 2 years (4 semesters) only? Right now, you hardly have any credits.

How do you know I have hardly any credits? I haven’t posted anything on what I have?

2 years is fine. I will get residency there after a year and probably just go for in-state tuition over the scholarship anyway.

Well I got my acceptance today! Milestone one complete  Just need the scholarship to go through now.
