Hello,
I am currently a junior and am worried about my GPA. Freshman year, I got a B+ in Intro to Programming I and an A in Intro to Programming II. Sophomore year, I got a A in AP Computer Science A and this year I got an A in Advance Topics in Computer Science (Post AP). I have coordinated my school’s annual Hackathon and have created my own apps, and was an AIME qualifier. I really would like to major in computer science at Stanford but am worried that my B+ in Programming I will ruin my chances for that. It was my first year at a college prep high school, coming from a public low ranked middle school, and I was simply not used to the test format and screwed up on my first test, which brought my grade down severely, as there were only 2 tests, weighted 40% each. So, do I still have a chance on getting in to the school of my dreams? (I currently have a 4.5 weighted and 3.97 unweighted GPA)
Here is my courseload for this year:
-AP Chem
-AP Latin
-School Newspaper (EIC)
-APUSH
-AP Eng Lang
-Precalc Honors
-Advance Topics in CS
-AP Studio Art
-AP Psychology
(I am class of 2019)
If I remember correctly, Stanford doesn’t consider freshman year.
Remember to find other schools to fall in love with as well. You just can’t count on admission to Stanford.
Stanford rejects 95% of its applications. You need to love your backup schools even if your grades, scores, and everything is seemingly perfect.
I know that, but I am just asking if my chances are 0% now because of that B+
It doesn’t matter. At all.
If you get rejected, it won’t be because because of one B+.
Stanford is just one school in 3000. Colleges are nothing more than a tool used to achieve a dream, it’s not the dream itself. In fact, if you’re studying computers, it really won’t matter where you go to school. College is a very big expensive purchase and you NEED to shop around for the right college for you.
I’ve been told Stanford does not consider 9th grade.
mom2jw is right they don’t consider your freshmen year grades. you will be completely fine.
Stanford doesn’t consider freshmen year grades, but are there any other colleges who do?
Yes. Most colleges consider freshman grades. Regardless, the advice given above applies to every US college:
It’s not quite accurate to say that Stanford does not consider freshman year grades. They require your complete transcript from 9-12, but they “focus” on 10-12. Nonetheless, your B+ will not matter one way or the other.
I got a B+ my first semester of senior year in AP Lit and I still got in!! (somehow)
I got into Stanford this year. On my high school transcript are 9 Bs and a C. Don’t sweat it.
