How will I fit in?

I've been accepted to Uof Alabama and Auburn U. I'm jewish and I'm really interested in checking these schools out. Will I be discriminated against for my religious beliefs? I am not, by any means, extremely religious. I'm VERY social and I attend on taking part in Greek Life. Will my world turn upside-down at these Universities? Am I in need of a reality check?

Why don’t you check if there is a Jewish Students Organization at the two universities and then contact current Jewish students to get their feedback? It should be easy to check on each school’s website.

Also, there are some culturally Jewish fraternities. See if AEPi exists at these schools. Edit: And I just realized that I assumed you were male - if you’re female, there are culturally Jewish sororities too, check for AEPhi.

Years ago, when I attended college, I didn’t realize how dramatically ‘off’ I’d feel by attending a school that didn’t have a substantial Jewish population. I was from Long Island, and was attending Carnegie-Mellon.

I’m sure things have shifted thru the years, and each school is different.

My best recommendation would be to spend a couple of days on campus; it’s the only way you’ll know for sure if you’re comfortable or not.

I know some Jewish kids at Alabama that have been very happy. But, they are quite social AND grew up in Alabama and went off to college with a number of their friends. No info about Auburn.

Auburn used to have an AEPi chapter, but it died out. There are currently no re-colonization plans. Same goes for UofAlabama. I suppose you could see if either has a SAMMY chapter, but if AEPI failed at both, it seems unlikely.

You should check out the sections of the Hillel website about [Alabama and Auburn, as well as the website for UA’s Hillel chapter](http://www.hillel.org/HillelApps/JLOC/Campus.aspx?AgencyId=17808). They’ve got some links and contacts that could give you a lot of information. Alabama looks like it would be more comfortable for you than Auburn - the Jewish population is larger (although it’s still relatively small) and they have a Jewish fraternity and sorority.

I’m Jewish and applied to Auburn… I know they do have a Hillel.

quaere, which frat is that? AEPi closed shop there years ago, and as far as I know, SAM has never existed there. I am assuming you mean ZBT, in which case I’d have to point out that for about five decades now they’ve been a non-sectarian, and in many chapters, Jews are thus the extreme minority there. I know that locally, the ZBT chapter is the only anti-semitic GLO on campus.

I was referring to ZBT, but I wasn’t aware that they’ve been non-sectarian for 50 years (!) - I was reposting info from the Hillel website. Thanks for the correction.
