how will my 3.8 in my first semester of freshman year affect my GPA

so in my first semester of 9th grade, i ended up with a 3.875 GPA (not going to make any excuses but i did have a lot of teachers switching in and out which made things more difficult) and my parents think that that basically ruined my chances of ending with a 4.0 GPA. It is unweighted and I am taking accelerated classes, but the transcript doesn’t reflect that. Also, my class grades were technically all As but i had two or three A-'s which lowered my GPA.
I’m definitely ending second semester with straight As but i don’t know if that will help. If i were to maintain a perfect 4.0 for the rest of my high school years, would my overall GPA still end up being something like 3.975? Again, my school doesn’t weight the GPA’s so it looks like I have worse grades than other kids who are taking an easier schedule than i am. I know that a lot of people don’t pay as much attention to freshman year but I’m worried that not having a perfect 4.0 will decrease my chances of being hs valedictorian

Yes, it would.

Honestly, being Valedictorian isn’t that big of a deal. A few A-s freshman year (and not even B+s, or anything lower: your grades are still As, and many colleges don’t differentiate!) really won’t count against you for anything.

okay thanks so much! yeah i thought about it and i realized that its not that big of a deal as long as i keep my grades up @topaz1116

Having a perfect 4.0 UW is unrealistic if you want to enjoy high school. Get that through your mind. I’ve talked to my older friends at USC who mentioned a 4.0 is even more out of reach in college, especially at those schools filled with talented kids. That being said, still take challenging courses, just don’t be too bummed when you get that first B (if ever, prove me wrong).
