I’ve seen a lot of people on CC put their volunteer hours on their college apps, they usually seem to range from 50-300ish hours. I was wondering if my extended volunteer experience with Americorps will look favorably to admissions at the transfer level. I really want to transfer into a top school like amherst or cornell, and I wasn’t sure how they valued volunteer efforts. I also wasn’t sure if LAC’s valued it more than large research unis. If it’s relevant, I want to pursue physics.
Instead of going straight from HS to college, I joined Americorps as a volunteer and I’ve logged 4,300 hours of community service, a 2 1/2 year commitment. I travelled throughout the U.S. I built homes for the poor elderly in rural appalachia, I was a sawyer in nevada that cut down trees to preserve wildlife and prevent fire, and I tutored at-risk youth in math and science in urban cities within Florida.
