How will my essay topic fare in college admissions?

I had a little trouble coming up with a topic for my college essay, and so I went with something that my English teacher suggested. It’s basically about my father and I working on my car to fix the engine. The direction that I was suggested to go in was to stress the time that my father and I were spending together throughout the essay, rather than the whole car part. Is this the type of thing that would work well as an essay topic?

Sorry to be a grammer Nazi, but I don’t want you to make this error in your essay.

“About” is a preposition. Your father and you are the object of the preposition. It’s “about my father and me”.

I think it’s a very nice topic for an essay.

Thanks for your response GMTplus7, and thanks for the correction!

I feel like colleges are looking to see essays that exemplify traits like leadership, overcoming hardship, great intelligence, etc., and I see so many essays like those of people growing up with limited resources, achieving great things, or other such things, that I’m just not sure what to write about anymore. Thanks for your input!

I think it has the potential to be a great essay.

Absolutely trust the opinion of your English teacher over a bunch of other high school kids online.

GREAT essay topic, but it will all depend on how you write it. My AP Language and Comp teacher said that the best essay she ever read was about a boy picking grapes with his grandfather and learning to enjoy the silence. If you ask me, it sounds quite a bit like yours as far as the sentiment and path taken to make the discovery.

Thanks for your guys’ input! Is there anyone here that could read over my essay and give me some final pointers/thoughts before I send it in? I’d love to get some final input from some different sources than my English teacher.
