Honor Roll Freshmen and Junior Year (spring and fall)

I will be writing my college essay on how I skipped a grade (1st grade) and how it affected me.

I will have 2 strong rec's from Junior Year teachers and maybe 1 more from a former religion teacher.

Now... onto my suspension

In April of my sophomore year I was suspended for 1 day when I was caught trying to break into a school office with a clothes hanger. My college advisor has told me that no students of hers have ever been rejected solely b/c of a suspension, and that it won't affect me much. It has been my only disciplinary problem at school and I haven't gotten in trouble before this.

Also, I can pay full boat (I think...) whereever I apply so financial aid shouldn't be an issue.

What do you think my chances are at these schools. I feel like some are definite reaches, but most are manageable, esp. because of my school's reputation and my increased grades in my junior year. I am planning on majoring in business with maybe a minor in econ or accounting, and all of my potnetial schools are well known for their business programs.

Thanks!

And why exactly were you trying to break into a school office? :)

Well, regardless, I doubt it will hurt your chances too badly. You have a fairly good list of colleges there, a couple slight reaches and many matches. I think you have a good shot at most all of those schools.

it will hurt a bit, but you really have to explain yourself well in the part of hte app that asks for if you had any disciplinary actions

ya why did you try to break into a school office? for a clothes hanger?

^ lol, no, s/he was using a clothes hanger to try and open the door, for whatever reason.

Maybe if you write an essay about the lesson learned from the suspension and how you have grown as a person/responsible member of society? If you don’t address the issue it might be a problem.

my brother was suspended twice (nudity once, sexual harassment the next), and with mediocre GPA/ACT got into ohio state fine… so I don’t think it will be that big of a deal

It is hard to say. W&M can be funny about these things, but I know kids who got in with worse records than yours. You should compose a paragraph explaining the “yes” that you have to put on the app; I think it is expected. To be honest, it seems to me an awful lot of the kids from my sons’ prep school had disciplinary issues, and those very kids did well in college choice. I know it can be a bigger problem as you get closer to senior year as you are expected to have matured. My son had an incident sophomore year that did not affect his outcomes in some of the same schools you are choosing. And he did report his transgression. The GC muttered that it was probably the most interesting reading of the day for some of those adcoms who are plowing through accolade after accolade, achievement after achievement.

I was suspended for 3 days junior year and I’m going to a school with a 9% acceptance rate. You have to write well about it, is the thing.

Well I was suspended freshman year in-school (not out of school suspension) for insulting someone, it was total BS, hope it doesn’t hurt me.

Other than that my record is clean.

i got accepted into harvard, and when i was talking to others that got in, one of them was actually suspended in high school as well. i am not exactly sure what for, but he got into harvard with a suspension, so i wouldn’t worry too much!
