How will one semester affect admissions?

-Question for my friend

He took 17 ap classes total

In top 5 out of class of 850, might still be sal or val due to his 17 ap's..

U.W G.p.a: Overall : 3.94 or 3.96

9th grade 1st sem: 4.0
9th grade 2nd sem: 4.0

10th grade 1st sem: 3.57 or 3.75 pending; 7 classes(extra period) 2 or 3 B's
10th grade 2nd sem: 4.0

11th grade 1st sem: 4.0
11th grade 2nd sem: 4.0

12th grade 1st sem: 4.0

He wants to know how much influence it will have over admissions? He was really depressed for some reason that semester, not sure why though.

He is aiming for harvard/stanford/yale/princeton

It depends; if it were in grade 9 you could probably get away with it, but again depends on college and other factors. I would say even with that semester your friend’s grade looks perfect.

oh i see, he is not sure weather he shud bother ask his counselor if she might write something pertaining to that semester such as he went through some hardships ( hes a lowincome URM) or something… or is that only for really low grades?

i know someone who got into Yale and he got 1 C and 1 B first semester senior and mostly A’s the rest of his HS career. i really don’t think one semester, especially senior year, is gonna matter. the first 3 years are the bulk of career. the admissions officers will make a decision based on the rank and grades these 3 yrs, not one semester

^^ how about as a sophomore?

A low income URM Val or sal? Does he have decent scores? If yes, no worries.

This is assuming a real URM: black, Hispanic, Native American.

^ he is about 25% spanish and 75% white

Oh, then I would be concerned for the very top colleges. Simply, they turn down most with no glitches.

^ Ok, but lets say he ends up getting a 3.7 g.p.a that semester 5 A’s, 2 B’s. Will it really be considered a “glitch” in his application?

thanks for all the feedback

If has has tip top scores and an impressive EC, he could certainly survive 2 Bs.
