how will volunteering abroad increase my chances?

I want to go to a school like Cornell and my stats make it a reach as of now. This summer I am thinking of volunteering to go to Honduras or El Salvador (Its a central american country I can't remember the exact one right now) and help people by delivering to them their medications.

My other ECs are:
Soccer my whole life
Two summers volunteering at the YMCA as a camp counselor
Two summers (different than the ones from YMCA) volunteering at the local hospital.

Thanks!

btw…these people are living in poverty. I am not going to the nice coastlines of the country.

If this is something your parents pay for, it will be regarded as service-tourism–no big bump on your chances. Just a rich family buying their kid an EC line.

If this is something you raise money for, raise money for the medications that are supplied, etc, then it is seen as something more meaningful.

yeah i’m not sure how i’m getting down there but its with my uncle who works in a hospital so idk. And by no means am I trying to “buy my way in” I really would like to do this, I just want to know.

Honestly? It’s just another common activity.

UT84321 (post #3) hit the nail on the head. Do it if you truly want to do it; just don’t expect an admissions bump from it. Good luck.
