I didn't get any likely letters from the so-called lower ivies? Does that mean I have no chance at HYP and the like?

Not all schools do likely letters

i know, but i have many peers who have gotten them. I know most of the ivies do.

Oh lord. Not all applicants who are accepted get likely letters -- only a small fraction of them get likely letters. Schools don't have the resources or time to send likely letters to everyone who may be accepted and if a student is borderline, they can't tell them they are likely or not. So no, not receiving a likely letter doesn't mean anything.

The ONLY way to know for sure whether or not you have been accepted is when you receive the acceptance letter in your hand. Decision Day is NOT so far away -- just be patient and wait a couple more weeks and you'll know for sure whether or not you've been accepted or denied. It's hopeless to try to decipher some complicated set of codes people think schools send out to determine whether you've been accepted. Relax.

Most of applicants that get accepted don't get likely letters. Usually it's just special recruits (athletes, minorities, etc) which are not the majority of accepted students.

Don't worry about it.. im a twin and i got one.. yet my brother with almost identical stats didn't. We both were accepted in the end.

thanks. i feel like i am lacking because all my peers have gotten at least one.

bump? does anybody else know about this? Literally 15 people from my school have gotten at least one likely from an ivy.

The OP's question is whether it would make it less likely he'll be accepted at HYP. IMO, the answer is yes. I think 'lower' ivies use likely letters to try to garner good feelings among the candidates they know will be choosing between them and other top colleges, especially HYPS.

So if you're a candidate at more than one lower ivy that send LL's and you did not receive one from any of them, I think it's a logical conclusion that they are not expecting to lose you to the competition. If it is just one lower ivy, it would not mean as much IMO, but more than one gives you a good read.

That said, it's not at all unusual to get into HYP and be rejected from less competitive schools.

thank you. the only somewhat strange thing is that most of the people who have gotten LLs at my school have lower stats than I and the other people at my school who haven't gotten LLs. ... why?
