I'm a junior and I've been considering applying for the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), which is a 10-month high school student exchange program which includes a scholarship that covers almost all expenses. I think my chances of getting in are pretty good, but I'm wondering how this affects admissions. For one, while I'm about to start visiting colleges and have been searching online for some time, I would probably still be visiting colleges in the fall of my senior year.

The other thing is coursework. I'm in German 4, will be taking AP German next semester, and am in the German Honors Society. I enjoy language courses and my teacher has said that she expects I will get a 5 on the AP test if we stick to the course schedule. Despite this, I am concerned about how my courses will be affected. The exchange includes a month of an intensive language prep course, but I had been hoping to take AP Cal/Phys, my school's course which combines Calculus BC with one of the physics APs; APUSH; my school's LNA program, because I'd like the clinical experience/certification/potential hospital jobs as I'm interested in medical school; Anatomy & Physiology; and somehow squeeze in 2 credits (two semesters of one block with my school's block scheduling) of several required classes, which could mean summer classes and after-school courses of PE, Health 2, and Consumer Education (my idea of fun right there!). I'm mostly concerned about the idea of taking an AP math/science course (or its German equivalent) and A&P in a foreign language (assuming A&P was offered). While I may be in upper-level math, mathematics requires a lot of work for me. Does anyone else have experience taking classes on foreign exchange with a comparable knowledge of the language? Would it be pretty much necessary for me to do another year of high school when I got back? How would taking another year affect my application? Also, I'll have just turned 17 when I'm currently set to graduate, so would this make an impact on the last question?

How would the exchange itself affect the strength of my application? I would be attending Gymnasium, the German equivalent of a U.S. public prep school. I'm interested at this point in Tufts, Cornell and maybe UC Berkeley or UCLA (assuming my family could afford OOS UC costs) as reach schools and BU, Connecticut College and Colgate as some ideas for reach schools. I'm also starting to look at Reed, but I get the feeling my parents are not so on-board with that option.

Also, I don't want to turn this into a chance me thread, but if it makes any difference in how the exchange would affect my app, my sophomore PSAT was CR72/M54 or near there (I know it's low, I work slowly in math but I also think it was a bit of a fluke)/W78 and my unweighted GPA is 3.76, weighted class rank 22(23 UnWt)/215 (hoping to bring that up at least to 20 or below for 10%, but I'm not counting on it) and I got a 4 on my sophomore year AP Chem exam. Also SATII Chem 690 because I got confused by the format and didn't finish all the questions, but it was pretty easy so I'm hoping for mid to upper-700s when I retake it - then again, that's another stat which I'm just "hoping to bring up".

Sorry that that is so long, and thank you to anyone who took the time to read it.
