Hey all,

I'm currently a sophomore at Baylor University and am interested in applying as a transfer to a few schools, including Rice. I'm particularly interested in Rice's Cognitive Sciences major. What I'd like to know from any current students is: (1) how abysmal are my chances and (2) how well does Rice match my interests in a prospective school.

The following are my basic stats:

College GPA: 3.65, Honors Program
Undecided Major, Pre-medical track
ECs: 3 or 4 significant; several with just "regular" involvment.

ACT: 31 (I won't submit my SAT, since it's not as high, relatively)
HS GPA: 3.3 UW (I know, I know... however, the school district has a strong rep so that should assuage things some. I fully plan to discuss my past shortcomings in my essay.)

Essentially, I'm looking for a school with a strong premedical program (which I know Rice has), along with a more liberal, friendly community, and lastly, a city which I can actually enjoy (though I'm car-less at the moment). I have far too many reasons to leave Baylor (esp. since I'm not Christian!), so putting together a convincing essay won't be a problem.

My only real concern, though, is being premed: how difficult are the classes? Or really, how harsh is the grading? My science GPA is currently hanging at around a 3.5, and if I transfer, I could certainly risk lowering it, not to mention having to find new professors for recs. all over again.

Any advice/replies are greatly appreciated.
