In CAS as an undeclared, but I’m leaning towards engineering.

u would talk to your advisor and an advisor or dep head in engineering and find out the exact procedure from them…i went cas–>sargent and i just had to fill out a form.

You need to take the pre-reqs before transferring in. From what I recall, it is Calculus I, Calculus II, Multivariate Calculus, Physics I and II (calc-based for engineers), and Chemistry I. Before you take all of those, discuss this with an advisor both at CAS and at the Undergraduates Program Office in the ENG building. They will put your name on a list to review you after you complete all the pre-reqs (or have AP credit for) and submit your grades for review.

Well I’m just entering as a freshman this fall. I have Calc BC credit, but none of the others. Aren’t most of those classes supposed to be taken during your freshman year?

What did you get on the BC exam? A 4+ on BC and 4+ on AB will fulfill both your Calc I and Calc II. Lower than 4 on BC but 4+ on AB will just fulfill AB.

True that those are the courses that ENG students take their Fr and So year, but in order to transfer, you still have to take those pre-reqs before they review your application. Also, what is your current GPA?

I think the reason you need those pre-reqs is to prevent any kids from falling behind. In ENG, you pretty much always follow the planning sheets since a lot of the upper classes are only offered for certain semesters and they all have pre-reqs and co-reqs. In other words, if you only had half of the pre-reqs done and entered in, you wouldn’t be able to follow their courses since some will require you to have completed other courses. bu.edu/eng ->click on undergraduate and look for the program planning sheets of majors you’re interested in.

Well I haven’t actually started college yet, so I have no current GPA. I got into CAS with a generous scholarship, so I’m pretty sure I could transfer into ENG. I’d be taking classes with all the other freshman, so how would I fall behind?

And I actually just took BC this year, but I know I got a 5.

I’m sorry that I can’t say anything else other than what their policy is. I know people who decided to transfer during freshman year also, but you still have to follow through the pre-reqs. What you can do is go into ENG’s Undergraduate Program Office to open up a file for yourself by seeing one of their advisors. What then happens is that as you complete the pre-reqs, they will get added to your file and once you are complete, the Dean of ENG reviews it to see if you are accepted for transfer.

Anyways, why are you feeling so pressured to transfer right away? If you are sure you can keep a good gpa and can successfully pass the pre-reqs, you’ll be in the same spot you would if the policy wasn’t in place…no real difference since you don’t get an ENG degree until you GRADUATE. The policy is in place to ensure equal treatment of all transfers, they can’t just selectively follow it for certain people and not allow others based on simple words. It’s worth a shot if you really are that desperate but I still see no point. Just go with the usual process and you’ll graduate with an ENG degree. If anything, you’ll graduate with 2 perspectives, one from CAS and one from ENG, so you may know your way around BU better…

I’m going to be an ENG junior this year and if you are even thinking you might want to switch to ENG, I’d call BU before you go to orientation and see if they can switch you right away. It’s going to be much easier to switch back into CAS than it is going to be to switch into engineering. Your freshman year of ENG you will be taking a MATLAB programming class and 2 intro to engineering classes. You’ll want to make sure that you have those squared away.
