I received a C- in Statics during the spring semester, and I'm currently retaking the course this summer.

I believe I'm likely to get a B or B+ for my summer retake.

I plan on applying for a transfer from University of Iowa to UIUC's mechanical or aerospace program as a sophomore.

Even though the C- will be replaced and my total GPA adjusted, it will still be on my transcript, and I'm concerned that UIUC would count that against me.

All transfer decisions are based on a full file review and no one grade is determinative. The C grade and make up to B can both be considered as part of that review although neither is determinative. As to being able to meet minimum GPA’s, both can be considered for total GPA and math/science GPA minimum of 3.0, and the B in the make up cpurse would be considered to meet minimum in the particular course area. I assume you intend to apply to transfer into junior year (mechanical and aerospace are not currently considering transfers into sophomore year). Thus, you will have another full semester that will be considered when you apply and decision is made. As to evaluating actual chances, one cannot base that on info provided but be aware that there are some headwinds to be aware of: (a) he transfer admission rate for engineering is currently only in the 35% range overall and less for mechanical and aerospace engineering which are crurrently impacted majors (i.e., they have more students in those majors than they want to have for the respources available); (b) the minimum 3.0 GPA that you may see for transfer consideration is just that: the minimum to even be considered and those actually accepted are mostly higher, and usually significantly higher for any impacted major.

Wait, those two engineering departments will not accept a spring semester transfer (aka 2nd semester sophomore transfer)?

I believe I’ll get a 3.5 to 3.6 GPA when fall semester starts. I haven’t taken many gen-ed courses (8 hours total) since I transferred some using AP credits.

I would already have over 30 semester credit hours by then, which means my high school academics shouldn’t be taken in consideration.

I also did a 1 month programming internship with a physics professor, though it was a part-time position due to taking a 4hr microeconomics (counts as a gen-ed for Uni of Iowa) and the 2hr Statics course.

I can post my transcript (sensitive info marked out) if you want to have a better idea of my situation.

The point is that you could have the perfect transcript and still not get in since the MechSE department and Aero department are basically already at capacity.

I think what was said is that sophomore transfers (less than 60 semester hours) are not being accepted and you would have to put in probably two more semesters to be able to transfer as a junior. Even then there is less than a 35% admission rate for AE.

One of the main reasons why I want to transfer from Uni of Iowa to UIUC is having access to larger internship/co-op opportunities, even if it meant competing against additional people.

However, I believe that the longer it takes for me the transfer, the less time I would have to build connections at UIUC, which would defeat the purpose of having additional access to job opportunities. I am well aware that having connections is essential to getting an internship/co-op.

By the time I’m a second-semester sophomore, I would’ve already have a sizable connections with recruiters, engineers, and professors at University of Iowa. Starting over from scratch as a junior at UIUC would put me at a disadvantage.

Well, @drusba was pretty clear. The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering programs are not accepting transfers at the Sophomore level. Are there any other schools you are looking at for Sophomore transfer?

No. Not really. I was looking at UIUC because I’m an Illinois resident and my dad is a researcher at UIUC, so there is a 50% student tuition discount, thus lowering the cost down to around $25K.

However, because he hasn’t been working there long enough, I would only get the tuition discount as a junior.

From what I’ve heard, UIUC doesn’t give many merit-based scholarships, and although Uni of Iowa’s tuition would cost more as a junior, they automatically give out sizable engineering scholarships.

Going to a different out-of-state school would be even less worth it.

Back during high school as a senior, SIU Carbondale offered an attractive bundle of scholarships, though I decided to turn it down because a family member that works at Caterpillar (and is friends with engineers) said that SIUC was unheard of at Caterpillar.

UIC has a Mechanical Engineering program, not Aerospace. i wasn’t sure which one you actually wanted. My school, Illinois Tech, has an Aerospace Engineering program though.

According to my transcript, I have taken 36 semester hours and I have a total of 46 semester hours with transferred courses.

I’m also taking 17 semester hours for this fall semester after switching a gen-ed higher level microeconomics with a lower level macroeconomics. However, if I do get a part-time research job (currently waiting for interview schedule date), I will be dropping the gen-ed course which will bring it down to 13 semester hours.

So, 63 semester hours or 59 hours + part-time research job + possibly slightly lower GPA after the fall semester ends. I wonder which choice would UIUC prefer?

(I prefer to have the part-time research job to improve my chances of getting a co-op or summer internship as a sophomore.)

So if I stay on track with 63 semester hours, I could apply for a transfer into spring 2015?

If that’s the case… Better chances of transferring a semester early or getting a part-time research job that would help me with getting future internships… Hm…
