How would you compare UGA to UNC? Which is the better school?

Which school is considered to be better?

UNC is considered the better school overall.

UNC-Chapel Hill is one of the top ranked universities in the country. UGA doesn't seem to have as much prestige.

UGA is a good school, but UNC is better and much more prestigious.

What are you comparing them in? UGA actually has some departments that are probably better than UNC's and they have different kinds of Honors programs as well (UNC's is more independent-minded while UGA's is very heavy on research). More information would probably help us give better advice.

ah5871,
Yes, agreed-- if you could give a little more information we might be able to help a bit more. Georgia's Honors program is wonderful and, if I recall correctly (this is froma few eyars ago) if you wanted to major in, say, business, at UNC you have to apply after yoru soph yr to be accepted into the business program. I dont think that was true for UGA but I am not certain of that.

Are you out of state for both schools?

Both are very good, but the slight nod goes to UNC.

We have close friends whose children currently attend both UGA and UNC. UNC is definately the tougher admit-both to oos students as well as NC students. Admission to UGA is getting increasingly difficult and for the Presidential Honors program is pretty much like Ivy admissions ( from what we have learned from a family whose child turned down Harvard to enter same prgram at UGA).

My understanding is the daily workload is very little homework is required of Georgia students as undergrads-especially in core courses-not the case at Chapel Hill. While there are many similiarities, I would say if you want/need a "prestigious platform" for graduate school and can get into Chapel Hill and be happy-then take that option.

Wanna start a fight? Ask each of them which was the "first" state university in the United States.

First land grant university? UGA, chartered 1785. First to hold classes-UNC-CH. Which of your children is older, the one born first or the first to talk? :)

At the risk of starting a fight, I’ll offer this. Having lived in both states, it’s my distinct impression that the academic / intellectual climate at UNC is far greater than that at UGA, where football weekends and partying with alcohol tend to dominate the culture. Does that mean that it’s impossible to have a significant intellectual experience at UGA? Of course not. Does that mean that it’s impossible to party your way through UNC? Of course not.
