How would you define "top college"?

Why all the hate?

^ Because this thread is asking for a definition of top college, which is clearly broader than just “HYPSM” or even the US News Top 20 for that matter.

Prodigalson, you have some serious emotional issues to work out.

Your specialty seems to be ■■■■■■■■ threads and flaunting your attendance at “HYPSM”. Dude, get over yourself.

Your desperate desire to impress people is leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouths and you keep ruining threads which I’m trying to enjoy.

agreed. America didn’t gain it’s reputation as one of the best places to receive higher education in the world solely because of HYPSM

<oxbridge is=“” not=“” as=“” selective=“” hypsm=“” and=“” arguably=“” no=“” longer=“” prestigious…=“”></oxbridge>

First you say the top 20 isn’t universally recognized, and after I give 2 universally well recognized schools, you’re saying it’s not as selective.

You like to make up rules as you go, don’t you?

And how is Oxford and Cambridge not as prestigous or selective? Are you kidding?

[THE - QS World University Rankings 2009 - top universities | Top Universities](http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2009/results)

Cambridge and Oxford are both higher than YPSM + C. For your information, IMPERIAL College of London and UCL are ranked higher, too.

So what’s your response now? I would definitely like to see the new rule you make up this time to justify yourself. Hmmm… Probably something pathetic.

What do you expect from a BRITISH publication???

The THE-QS rankings clearly do not know the first thing about the prestige and selectivity of American universities.

How else do you account for some of these bizarre placements:

(1) both UCLA and Michigan over Berkeley

(2) NYU over Rice

(3) Wisconsin over Dartmouth

(4) Chicago over Princeton, MIT and Stanford

(5) Boston University over UNC

(6) Illinois/Purdue over Emory

I could go on, but you get the idea…

Given your unfavorable admissions experiences, I can certainly see why you bear such resentment against HYPSM…

Feel free to skip over mine or any other HYPSM-related posts. It’s understandable that they could easily bring back bad memories…

prodigalson reminds me of a poster that was banned last year. The similarities are astounding.

Great minds think alike…

prodigalson is clearly a ■■■■■. It’s only January 21 and he has already posted 385+ notes. Usually, new members take weeks before they have the nerve to post a message, and then only post a few over a few MONTHS. This guy is likely a repeat offender, methinks.

Yes, he is definitely a ■■■■■. Time to report him to admin and free up some bandwidth.

I have a lotta nerve (no pun intended).

TRANSLATION: Time to admit defeat.

lmao…you’re such a silly little dork.

Better a dork than a rat…

If you are interested in an international ranking, look at the Academic Ranking of World Universities (by Shanghai JiaoTong University). The QS ranking is based heavily on peer assessment and has been criticized for many errors. The ARWU is numbers-driven and performance-focused. Of course, the choices of performance metrics have their own issues (you may not care about the factors it measures), but it seems to be a more scientific, transparent ranking than QS.

ARWU World Top 10 (2009):

1 Harvard University
2 Stanford University
3 University of California, Berkeley
4 University of Cambridge
5 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
6 California Institute of Technology
7 Columbia University
8 Princeton University
9 University of Chicago
10 Oxford University

When I think top colleges I immediately think of the Ivy League + Stanford.
I also consider schools that are top 50 in rankings to be top colleges.
To me it’s mostly about prestige and reputation.

hahaha I bet prodigalson will say something like “only the chinese people care about the ARWU ranking”…

Top Colleges = [(USNews National U’s #1 thru #75) - Cornell] + US News LACs #1 thru #25

“Top Colleges = [(USNews National U’s #1 thru #75) - Cornell] + US News LACs #1 thru #25”

hi hater, go ahead and put rutgers in front of cornell :)
