How would you explain American high education to someone who knows nothing about it?

Ok, let's say you're walking down the street one day and you bump into a frail-looking man with a long, sraggly beard, torn pants, and no shirt. He tells you he's been living in the Amazon for the last thirty years, and has decided to come to America to pursue a college degree. He's an educated man--he has PhDs from both Cambridge and Oxford-- but that was fourty years ago, and he knows nothing about American colleges. How would you (briefly) explain to him American colleges? Would you talk about specific schools he should look at? Elite schools? LACs? State school? None of the above? Would you talk to him about what parts of his resume he should work on? Post anything you think he should know before he starts his college search.

Yeah, I meant to put "higher" education. I wish we could edit titles.

If he has PhDs from Cambridge AND Oxford, can't he just teach here? Why exactly does he want another college degree.

What were his PhDs in, What does he want do with the college degree, what is the college degree in and how old is he?

;)

Tell him to spend 5 minutes on CC.
