I’m not sure if this question is in the right category, and I know everyone’s schedules are different depending on your major, but I’m a new college freshman, and I’m going to be an art major. I was wondering if it’d be better to have a class schedule of mostly GE classes, and some art classes that goes towards my major? Like, since mostly each unit at my college is 4 units, and the max I can get is 17 units. It’s like have 3 GE (math, and english) classes, and 1 art major class. Or, either would it be better to have a balance between my GE classes, and art major classes? Like, 2 GE (math and english) classes, and 2 art classes. Or, is it already time consuming to have 1 art class, and it’s better to have 1 art major class, and 2 GE classes (English and math)? Or, in general, even though everyone’s major might be different, how did you balance out your class schedule?
I would talk to your advisor about this. Also see if there is a general curriculum for art majors.
Also look at the requirements you have for an art major…let us say that you have to take 10 art classes…then those should be spread over the 10 semesters. I would think that for a freshman having 3 GE and 1 art class would be good…i am not sure how time consuming the studio art classes are.
You should have a minimum of 15 crsits per semester to graduate in time, so for you, 4 classes.
You’re likely to have a Freshman seminar (methods, study skills) for 1 credit, an English Composition class, math/science, foreign language/social science, then one art class.
Second semester you could either stay with this or move to two art classes.
There is no one right answer for every student and every school. The answer will depend in part on how many GE requirements your school has, if there is an introductory art class you should take before you take higher level college classes etc. I’d second the recommendation that you speak with your advisor.
