I've heard from a few people on CC that it is easier to get into Duke if you're in-state because it is in their charter to have a certain percentage accepted (14%, I believe). I was just wondering if anybody could confirm this with a link to anything that states this from Duke. It seems as though it is true because we had a girl get in from our school (from rural NC) last year with less than stellar stats compared to everyone here. She had a 1340, 4/250, ~3.9, good recs and essays. It just seems like she wouldn't have a good chance at Duke unless residency were taken into account. Also, they ask what county you live in if in NC. But does anybody have any proof for sure? Thanks

Well I had a 32 ACT, 4/270, 3.96/4.83 GPA, good recs, great essays, with a particularly passionate EC. I'm from a pretty sketch county that sends like, 1 person to Duke a year, and I got deferred. Basically...it depends on the pool...or is a crapshoot. Either way it didn't work in my favor.

It's 11% instate, I think...so maybe there's a little better chance. I still think it's pretty much a crapshoot, like loveduke said. Although my friend (who got in ED today! yay!) did mention to me that they're looking to recruit more talented NC students, and that's part of what encouraged me to go ahead and apply RD although I don't have spectacular SAT scores (1410) and a 3.88 GPA.

The two kids that got in ED from my school (NC) are both pretty talented, though..

I can't find a website but I am absolutely positive there is an in-state quota from somewhere between 11-15%.

What county do you guys live in? I'm from Wayne...

Sorry loveduke, but at least you still have a chance for RD. Good luck

Union...right next to Mecklenburg. That's right...2 Duke acceptances last year for Union...

Alamance (Elon to be exact), accepted to Trinity

loveduke22, my heart goes out to you. I know that you love Duke just as much, if not more, than everyone else. Nonetheless, we all know that you will be successful no matter what great school u chose to attend. Duke would be making a HUGE, HUGE mistake if they did not admit u RD. I'm praying for u. Good luck and don't give up!

Thank you DAsh. You're going to make me cry because that was so sweet. Congrats! You totally deserved it, and I'm so happy people as awesome as you got in. What would Duke be like without my cool CC kids? I'm NOT giving up because I want it sooo bad. Who knows what will happen. Maybe RD will be my time.

Union and Mecklenburg are in the eastern part, right? (F in NC History...)

Haha...piedmont area...where Charlotte is.

o k a y...but could you tell me where wayne is??? lol I just remember hearing Union and Mecklenburg on the radio or news sometime, probably from all of the hurricanes.
So are they trying to make sure that they have diversity in terms of people from all over NC or are they asking for your county because then it helps them better get a feel for your environment and opportunities? Because where I live, there's nothing educational. They have more books at Duke's Swahili language learning center than they do at all of the libraries in my county combined.

I think Wayne is where Goldsboro is...right? Southeast of Durham? I'd imagine Duke would be a big fan of any quality students from that area. That's definitely why they're asking for counties. My area is a great example. Meck co. has prestigious private schools like Charlotte Latin, so a student like me would probably be a fish out of water with their applicant pool. Union, on the other hand, is much more rural with less opportunities such as that, so what might be a mediocre student in the Meck. Co. pull would be more promising in Union. That's just how I see it. MIght not be the case.

Wait! People have heard of Goldsboro??? What??? But yeah, near Wilson also.

I'm surpised that someone from a rural county like Wayne with great stats like yours got rejected, especially since that one girl from my school got in RD with worse stats. I'm sure as long as your grades dont drop horriblely then you have a great chance RD, at least better than me anyway.
