Okay, really. I want to know if I have a chance at Howard University. I am currently a Junior. My GPA is around a 2.6 (only freshan & sophmore year). After my grandmother died, i didnt do aswell 9th grade & failed English 9, but I managed to get back on track. I have taken numerous honors courses, a volleyball & softball athlete, & a member of the drama club & guitar club. My GPA is now around a 2.9-3.0 & I plan on taking my SAT's in May. Now honestly do i have a chance? I'm worried someone w/ better stats will out shine me :(

did you fail English 1 for the year or just for a marking period? because if you failed it for a marking period it wont show up on your transcripts…I would say get your gpa up to about a 3.2/3.3 and score around the 1500/1600s on the SAT and you’ll be fine…

Sadly I failed it for the year, & currently taking the class over. But so far it’s been all As and Bs junior yesr w/ all honor classes. I really hope my ninth grade doesnt affect my chances. Howard is my definite dream school!

@Tnh I feel the same way! I’m a junior in highschool. I had a terrible freshman year and failed integrated algebra. The second quarter of my sophomore year is when I had my wake up call. I currently have a 2.8 GPA and I’m taking AP US and holding A’s and B’s for my average. I’m in student government and I have attended several youth leadership conferences and have joined many organazations such as Jack and Jill and RYLO. Howard is my dream school and first choice. I def hope I get in!

You guys might be fine because colleges want to see improvement or consistent good grades. so as long as you are getting that wake up call and do will on sats you could get in

Yeah I def hope so. Malikwal, are you attending Howard in the fall?

Thank you I just needed a little reassurance. I hope Howard relizes that i have grown. I love everything about that school & I cant wait to apply.

& hope? Uh oh, your scaring me

I didn’t realize it until May of my junior year, but the SAT is like, the most important thing when it comes to getting into college, no matter what sites or people tell you. So it may be kind of hard to tell you your chances without it. I think I’ve said this before on here, but when I went to Howard’s open house in September, the guy kept stressing the SAT; I even gave him scenarios like what if I have a 4.0, im ranked number 1 in the class, and I have a million EC’s, but I have a 1350+ SAT…he kept saying that I would more than likely be deferred. When he told me that I was surprised out of my mind.

Sorry if I discouraged you guys in any bit, but I’m really trying to stress how important it seems the SAT is to them (ACT too, but I’m from jersey so all I hear is SAT lol) my opinion is that they’re trying to their prestige.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t sound like you guy’s gpas are horrible, the average is only a 3.2…I would say you guys will only need like a 1600 SAT/22 ACT

Thank you sooooo much. Very useful info.

So im guessing a 1500+ is what they want on the SAT? Do you know the score for the ACT?

varies…although they might not weigh the gpa as much as the SAT, doesn’t mean the completely disregard the GPA

I wouldn’t know exactly what you need, but a 2.5 may need a 1800 to get in, a 2.6 a 1750, a 2.7 a 1700, a 2.8 a 1650, etc

I was admitted to the HU class of 2016 and plan to major in biology. I have a 2.96 gpa from a top school in the country, and an 1180 SAT. For the full tuition scholarship it requires a 3.0 and an 1170. Do I just not get any money?
