I’m a junior at CSU-San Bernardino. Due to some mental health issues, my GPA plummeted to a 2.2. I’m currently dedicated to raising my GPA to fulfill my calling within the academic world. Is it possible for me to raise it enough to get into Howard University Grad School for Sociology? Please be honest. I want all the help I can get.
It’s unlikely.
Assuming that you’ve earned around 75 credits at this point (two years + last semester) and have a 2.2, even if you earned straight As for the last ~45 credits of your degree - second semester junior year and then all senior year - the highest GPA you could make is around a 2.87. Howard’s sociology department says you must have at least a 3.0 GPA to be eligible.
There are many ways students have gotten around poor college performance to get into PhD programs, though. Take some time off after college, work and do research in the field, and consider getting an MA in sociology first to show you can achieve at the graduate level.
