Hi,
Sorry for the delay. Summer whizzed by. Should be coming back from Germany soon. Summer school and overseas trip have totally changed my daughter. Competing with the most talented kids in the country has shown her what she must do to compete. As I mentioned earlier, she struggled at first (speed and rigor of summer school as well as she is so smart that she was used to getting A’s without true strategic study) but caught on and is now hitting on all cylinders. Good to see them enjoying themselves in Berlin. I mentioned to her to forget about school while over there, complete your seminars and presentations, learn from the experience and enjoy yourself. Then be ready to get after it in Fall 2019. Key question, when do they take their language exam?
@ChangeTheGame Thank you for the information!! We also live in Gwinnett County. The first week of school has already been hectic and filled with tons of homework. I already know this year is going to fly by. I’m already getting extremely sad?
@trob71 That is amazing. I know you are so proud of your daughter’s growth. My daughter took her foreign language exam before she went to the summer bridge so I am not sure when students can take the foreign language exam, but she should definitely look into that when she gets back on campus because freshman week is a good time to get that completed. My daughter is already moved in and waiting to help the large class of 2023 move in (Over 400 freshmen bigger than class of 2022) and excited to meet B-3.
@MomOfThree80 You sound like my wife, but after living a good part of the summer without both of my kids, it hasn’t been bad at all for my wife or I. You are right that this school year will fly by.
@ChangeTheGame I am so happy you created this thread sir. I am looking into applying into Howard Bison Stem Scholarship. I already submitted my Early Action application to Howard University for the Chemistry program ( Pre Med)
A little info about me:
I am an African Black Male who attended a Nigerian High School, 1450 in SAT 1 , 800/800 in SAT chemistry, 4.0 /4.0 UW CGPA, High school Senior Prefect and President of Students’ Representative Council in my high school. Valedictorian in my High School and I won alot of awards At State and National level in Nigeria.
After filing my FAFSA, I have an EFC of 0.00.
Based on my stats, I dont know if I am qualified enough to apply for Bison Stem Scholarship because it seems to me that the extraordinary get into the program, and I am just a normal student who is just passionate about getting That MD- PhD degree that will really help in solving a lot of medical problems the world, especially my people from africa, is facing
Welcome @NewToAmerica. I am glad this thread has helped answer some of your questions. Your academic stats are definitely good enough based on the students selected in previous cohorts, and your stated passion is one that could be the difference in being selected as a Bison Stem Scholar at Howard. The application is already open for the next incoming class so my advice is to focus on the essay portion of the application and good luck to you.
Thanks so much. I really do appreciate
@ChangeTheGame Are you ready to walk us through this process for the third year? LOL. You’re The Godfather of the Bison Stem information. DD requested the two additional letters of recommendation last week and she’s starting the essays this weekend. We’re still waiting on an acceptance, hopefully on Friday. But I would like for her to get an early start on this scholarship application. She’s so burned out that she’s considering not doing any RD applications. Which I told her she at least needed to do 1 GA school for Zell Miller.
You know I got you @MomofThree80 and I will help anyone who needs info on the Bison STEM Scholars Program. My son is also burnt out, so I told him to only focus on scholarship funding at his top schools at this point. So he has started working on his Bison STEM essay as well and I have asked him to be done before Christmas. I am thinking positive thoughts on a Howard acceptance tomorrow for both of our families and for the scholarship money to be plentiful.
@ChangeTheGame We got the invitation email
My son saw the email last night too @MomofThree. It is time to go get the money and the benefits of such a great program.
Myson was accepted this fall and just received an invitation to apply. I have question. There are three essays in the application with a 500 word requirement. does that mean 500 words for all three or 500 words per question?
Hey @SouthernGirl803, you can write up to a 500 word maximum for each essay question. Congratulations on being invited to apply and good luck to you.
Please excuse the typos. Thank you for responding. We believe it is a privilege just to get an invitation. I have followed the threads of questions and comments related to BSSP, the process, the interviews, cohort experiences and the impact it has had on the accepted scholars. I look forward to learning more as we move forward in this process. Happy New Year!
I definitely agree with that. The increase in the minimum applicant requirements to become a Bison STEM Scholar since my daughter’s cohort makes it even more selective, so you should be very proud. There were several on this thread who were selected as Bison STEM Scholars last year and I am rooting for your son.
@ChangeTheGame Thank you so much for your input on this thread. I couldn’t find the podcast that you referenced on the Facebook page around July 2018. Do you know if its located any place else? My daughter received and invitation to apply. Thanks!
@northsouthfam, here is the website link. Congratulations to your daughter are in order for getting an invite to apply which means that she is among the top incoming STEM majors at Howard.

Hi everyone!
We got the invitation. So excited. Thank you in advance for all your help.
I wanted to share some news that my daughter sent me this morning… Howard University has received a 10 million dollar gift from the Karsh Family Foundation that will be used to fund STEM scholarships at Howard for students shooting for advanced degrees in STEM displines. The Bison STEM Scholars program is going to be renamed after the Karsh family, and will also fund 2 scholarships named the Lomax Kipp Scholarship. That is the 2nd large gift (the 2 gifts together total 14 million dollars) in the last 6 weeks that have been linked to the Bison STEM Scholars program at Howard. Sad to see the name change, but the program has really made an positive impact in a short period of time.
@ChangeTheGame Thank you for the information and the article! I wonder if they will accept more students in the upcoming cohort. Or does the donation increase the longevity of the program.
I just looked at the STEM website and they’ve already changed the name…
