Hello there. I am a parent of an amazing daughter who is a member of the college graduating class of 2024 and destined for greatness. She has been accepted to the K4 Cohort at Howard University. Congratulations to all the scholars and fellow parents.
Congratulations @bgmmom to your daughter and your family…
@ChangeTheGame Hello! Thak you for your hard work. My daughter got the agrrement form, and it seems there would have to do the Summerbridge program online. Also, the trip to Germany has been cancelled and if they are fortunate enough, they might do it int
Hi @Temiiiiii and congratulations to your daughter on becoming a member of the Karsh STEM Scholars Program. My son got the contract agreement email as well and he is excited to get started in the fall.
Hi All! My daughter was also accepted into the program, however I have some questions. If my daughter receives an outside scholarship, would all the proceedings go to Howard or would she be able to keep some of the money for herself in terms of personal expenses?
@tmwilsonfl, congratulations to your daughter and your family. As far as the outside scholarships go, Howard would apply the funds up to the cost of attendance (COA) which includes extra expenses like transportation costs, lab fees, school supplies etc.
For 2020-2021 Howard will costs $48,080 and the scholarship will pay for Tuition, mandatory fees, room & board, and $1,500 a year towards books and supplies. From what I can see so far, I estimate the 2020-2021 value of the KSSP scholarship to be approximately $44,400 (we will see the actual amount once the Bison Web updates the Scholarship funds) so you would be able to keep the 1st $3,680 (up to the COA) for next school year that would be dispersed as a refund check once a semester. So if your daughter got a $5,000 renewable scholarship as an example, she would receive a $1,840 refund check each semester and the excess $1,320 left over from the scholarship would be used to reduce Howard’s total scholarship offer.
Let me know if you have any other questions…
@ChangeTheGame So that rule is for outside scholarship, not for the Presidential Scholarship of HU?
Hey @yleehsia, for some smaller institutional scholarships, they do allow stacking from what I have seen, but you can not stack the Karsh STEM scholarship nor the Presidential Scholarship with any other Howard institutional scholarship. For outside scholarships you are able to stack from what I have seen, but the one thing I am not quite sure about is if a outside scholarship mandates that it funds go towards a particular cost (like a scholarship mandating that the funds can only go towards tuition).
The small outside scholarship that my daughter received had no restrictions on where it could be used, so it was refunded since we still were not funded up to the cost of attendance. I don’t know if an outside scholarship with a restriction that can only be used for tuition would be refunded (does it just reduce Howard’s tuition burden). You may want to ask a financial aid official or the Karsh STEM Scholars office about that particular scenario.
@ChangeTheGame hello to you sir! Do the kids actually have to spend the $1500 only on books. And do they get it every semester or year? Thanks for your hardwork and congrats to all the kids who got in.
Hey @Temiiiiii. The book voucher is $1500 a school year ($750 per semester). The book voucher can be used on anything that is available (or can be ordered) at the book store.
Hey KSSP parents, they just posted a montage of the new cohort 4 KSSP Scholars on the Karsh STEM Scholars Facebook and Instagram pages and our kids should all be represented.
This thread has been inactive for awhile. Is anyone else following it for info for 2021?
Hey @Jrmcafee. I am still following this thread if anyone has any questions about the program, but it normally doesn’t pick up steam every year until right about now when the finalists are getting ready to be selected.
Thanks for the quick response. I’ve read through your previous posts and I’d like to thank you for all of your valuable information.
I’m on pins and needles waiting for info on selection weekend.
Hello @ChangeTheGame, when do you think the decisions for finalists are coming out this year?
My student in the 4th cohort received the finalist’s e-mail last year on 2/28/20. Every Finalist announcement the last 3 years has occurred on a late Friday afternoon/early evening, so my guess is that you may find out tomorrow (02/26/21), especially since the math placement test is being held earlier this year. But I would also not be surprised if the finalist announcements came out a little later than my prediction (I was wrong by a week last year).
Do you know when the math placement test is being held this year?
They have the dates posted in the recruitment calendar on the Karsh website: Last names A-M take the placement testing on March 13th and last names N-Z take the placement testing on March 14th. Here is the KSSP Applicant roadmap link.
Thanks for the info!
Hi
Haven’t heard anything yet. Do they send out reject.letters on the same day as acceptance letters?
On pins and needles here.
