Howard University Karsh STEM Scholars Program (KSSP)

Thanks for the head’s up!

Thank you , good to know!

Any tips to get ready for the Math placement test?

If the test is still the same (ALEKS), it is just the math placement test that Howard gives to all incoming students. Many schools use ALEKS for placement testing. I don’t remember the exact test result needed to test into Calculus at Howard (I know it is in the low to mid 70’s), but your scholar should shoot for as high of a score as possible (and at minimum try to test into Calculus)… You should get a module sent by e-mail. My kids both did great by just looking at the preparation module, which was review from past math classes for them. Good luck to your scholar this weekend.

Ok, this is so helpful. Did the University send you the preparation module as well? Or was this something you found online?

Thank you :pray:t5:

Congratulations!!!

The preparation module is mentioned in the Math_Placement_Test_Letter attachment. They refer to it as the “Unproctored Placement Assessment that must be taken days before the actual test.”

Oh wow, okay. I totally missed that…checking again. Thank you.

My son got his email this morning inviting him to test. We are thrilled. Unfortunately he is away on a school trip but he is committed to figuring out how make time for the test. Does anyone know approximately how many students are asked to test? I apologize if this has already been answered.

Is it possible to view this video? Currently I get a message that it is private. My son was just notified that he is invited to test this weekend and we are praying he makes it to next weeks interviews.

Hey @AKhopefull. My guess is that the scholar who made that video was asked to take it down because there were too many “tips” and details of the KSSP weekend and the process for selecting Karsh STEM Scholars. I think that the KSSP administrators would like to keep some parts of the process “mysterious” for evaluation purposes.

once you send an email with your exam time and date - did you get any confirmatory email back from KARSH that they received the information?

Sent the scheduling info yesterday and no confirmation email from them yet…

My daughter forwarded an email to me from ProctorU confirming her test date on Sunday.

My son got a confirmation from ProctorU…nothing from Karsh.

He completed the unproctored assessment today. It’s our understanding that he has to complete 3 hours of the prep and learning module before he can take the assessment (on Sunday). Is that correct?

Yeah, that’s what I understand, too. I guess the prep work they want you to complete should help you with the assessment. So they want you to put your best foot forward.

Makes sense! Thank you

My son is out of town with his high school basketball team at their 3 day regional HS basketball tournament. So needless to say, I think he is distracted. He took his ALEKS pre- assessment today and scored a 85. Does anyone have a rough ball park on what they are looking for? Alaska is a unique state in that we have to fly from city to city. We are flying him home early from the trip Saturday night so he can test at home. I know this might make me horrible Mom but I hope they lose tonight so it will be easier for him to leave early. It will be heartbreaking if they make it to the State Championship next weekend and he won’t be able to attend because (hopefully) he will have the interviews. He seems to be doing well with managing it , whereas I am a wreck.

That score would definitely test into Calculus at Howard which almost all selected scholars in previous cohorts reached, so it is a good score. The test is out of 100 and both of my kids did better on the actual Proctored Test than the module Practice Test. Good Luck this weekend.
