Howard University Karsh STEM Scholars Program (KSSP)

@trob71 how did you get in contact with them ? Or did they reach out to you ?

@ChangeTheGame would you copy me on that PM you sent on how to prepare? Thank you
From the posts, seems to be all female finalist.

@ChangeTheGame. Thanks a million for the warm welcome, the PM and the guide on the link. Eternally grateful

@whyamisogood my daughter called the office. 202-806-7634 Took several tries. Lady was very nice and helpful. May take some time for her to get back to you.

@su1880 Congratulations on being selected as a finalist. I have sent you a PM and I am wishing you good luck this weekend. In my daughter’s group, 20 young women and 9 young men where selected as Bison STEM Scholars (which is about the ratio of female to male ratio at Howard in general) so you will most likely see a larger group of young women this weekend.

@trob71 Congratulations on your daughter being selected as a finalist and I am hopeful that your perseverance and faith to book your travel information before finding out yesterday was a sign of great things to come.

@whyamisogood Please continue to try and reach the Bison STEM office today and I am rooting for you.

My daughter is excited for this weekend and the finalists to visit campus and to host a student in her dorm room Friday night. I told my daughter a year ago that this was really a 2-way interview and that she should use the weekend to judge whether Howard was the “right” school just like the Bison STEM Scholars Program was looking for a new cohort of students. Good luck Finalists and please keep the thread posted with your thoughts and final results as you can help future students.

@ChangeTheGame @trob71 I will be sure to reach out to them again… and again… and again… lol till someone picks up the phone. I live all the way in Ohio… If I am a finalist I hope I can still make the trip. Thanks for the luck I’m gonna need it lol.

GUYS IM A FINALIST !! They finally picked up the phone lol

@whyamisogood Congratulations Bison STEM Scholar Finalist! Almost to the finish line. For both you and @trob71 make sure they send you the ALEKS information so you can look over the Math placement materials that you will get tested on along with any other e-mails that you may have missed over the last few weeks. I also want to tell everyone to relax and just show Howard what you have to offer. It feels like I am living out what happened to my daughter all over again, and I am excited to see what comes next for all of the finalists on this thread.

@ChangeTheGame they’re having me do a Skype interview… should I call them back and ask for the math information because the man i talked to never mentioned it. I know it’s a requirement … he didn’t mention it though.

@whyamisogood Since you are not going to Howard, you probably won’t be able to take the ALEKS in advance (unless you would be taking it with the same technology that my daughter took her language placement test which was on a labtop with a proctor watching you from the labtop camera). Howard uses ALEKS to place attending students in their 1st math class (There are ways to not have to take like having a good AP Calculus score for example but they gave all of the attending finalists the test). You can ask the question, but it sounds if selected, you would just take the ALEKS once you came to campus in June for the summer program to get placed in your summer math class.

My daughter received an email today. We are excited. @ChangeTheGame may send me a PM of the question as well. Thank you in advanced.

@ChangeTheGame I have a question, but I can’t figure out how to PM you. How does that work on this forum?

@3liklebirds Congratulations to you. I have sent you a PM and want to say good luck.

@veejay3 You have to get up to 15 posts and then you would be able to send a PM by just clicking on my name and then clicking on the message button. Since I have sent you a PM before you should be able to reply to the PM chat we have already had. Just in case I will send you another PM which should make it easy for you.

Thanks @ChangeTheGame , I wish all of you the best. We all know how expensive college can be.

@ChangeTheGame What a wonderful resource! Thanks for sharing your journey through this awesome program. My student is also a finalist and will be attending selection weekend. I would appreciate any additional tips you could share. To all the other parents and finalists, enjoy the weekend and the experience!

Has anyone received student accommodation information yet?

@kodi736 We haven’t received any info on housing yet. My daughter sent an email asking when that info will be shared, but no response yet.

@veejay3 ok thanks!

Good evening everyone. Please check your email. We just received a message from Howard with some major program changes due to a partial power outage on campus.

Hello All Finalist,
This is a copy of the email detailing the changes to the selection weekend. Please read and plan accordingly.

Subject: Selection Weekend Update - IMPORTANT!

Good evening Esteemed Finalists:

I regret to inform you that last night (early morning hours) Howard University experienced a power outage that affects several buildings on the main campus. As a result, most of the buildings on the north end of campus where our Selection Weekend program was to be conducted will be off-line to include a couple of our residence halls while repairs are being made in order to open those buildings for normal operations on Monday. So, we have spent much of the day re-programming the Weekend. Here are the changes and itinerary that will allow us to continue with the Selection Weekend:

Finalists will not be housed on-campus and are asked to remain with their families.
When finalists and their families arrive on campus Friday afternoon, they are to report to The College of Medicine, Mudd Building, 520 W Street, NW. Once in the building, you will go to the Red Room on the 3rd floor for check-in.
Check-in will be conducted from 2:30 pm – 3:45 pm.
Opening Program will begin at 4:00 pm and will conclude around 5:30 pm. At this time, parents will transition while finalists remain for additional programming. Parents will have time to themselves until picking up their son or daughter after their program has concluded for the day at 10:00 pm. Finalists can be picked-up at College Hall South, 2205 4th St. NW, Washington, DC 20059
Finalists should report to the Interdisciplinary Research Building (IRB) Saturday morning. Continental breakfast will be served at 8:00 am – 8:45 am.

Current Bison STEM Scholars acting as hosts/guides will take the finalist to the I-Lab in the ETS Building for the mathematics placement test. The test is scheduled for 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.
After the test, finalists will be taken back to the IRB for lunch.
After lunch, finalists will begin a round-robin that will include the interview, Scholars Panel and Scholar Research Presentation.
At 5:30 pm. Families will join the finalists for a Closing Program. After the conclusion of the Closing Program, there will be a light buffet before families begin their return home.

Finalists should bring their laptop, if you have one.
