Do Howard university have premed? Which academic program is the best to choose if you are interested in medicine?
Any major can be done with pre-med, but there are typically required or expected courses such as general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, math and/or statistics, English writing / rhetoric / literature, psychology, sociology. Because many of these overlap with many of the courses for biology majors, about half of applicants to medical school were undergraduate biology majors.
Other than the pre-med courses, the academic program or major to choose would be one that you have strong enough interest in to do well in, since college GPA (overall and in sciences) is an important first gate to pass in medical school admission.
Howard is certainly suitable for pre-med students. It also has a BS->MD combined program.
Hi @NashaeWalker27. I am a parent of 2 Howard University students. Howard University produces more African-American students who apply to Medical School than any school in America. At Howard, the largest portion of students attempting to go to Medical school are Biology majors, but my kids know students who are majoring in many subjects (Psychology, Math, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering are a few) who are currently planning to go to Medical School.
All students at Howard (and most other schools) on a Pre-Med track regardless of major will have to take certain classes (2 semesters of General Chemistry, 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, 2 semesters of General Biology, 2 semesters of Physics, etc.) if they want to go to Medical School. I am attaching Howard’s Medical School class requirements (classes taken in undergrad) just so you have an idea of the courses needed for a student.
