I know alot of kids who were rejected from berkeley, but who were accepted to ucla...why would this happen? is there a marked difference between admissions criteria for berkeley than for ucla (especially for non-science/math related majors)? does anyone know if, say, ucla likes athletes/ASB kids or cal likes political/international kids?

From my experience, people accepted to UCLA were more well-rounded in terms of extracurriculars and those who eventually went to UCLA were “peppy” people. Think smart student council athletes. I think GPA is not as important to UCLA as it is to Berkeley. At my high school, it was more difficult to get into UCLA than to Berkeley, but my senior class was a generally nerdy and unspirited bunch, LOL.

For UCLA, you need good scores and good ECs

For Berkeley, you need good scores and decent ECs or decent scores and great ECs

Basically, Berkeley is ok if your “goodness” is focused in one of the two, but for UCLA it must be split between the two.

pretty common

UCLA and Berkeley admissions are mutually exclusive. I don’t think there are specifics that either one looks for that another doesn’t. The valedictorian of my high school was all academics and not “well-rounded” and he got rejected to Berkeley but accepted to UCLA. I think the difference is just that there are different people reading your admissions. It’s not like they all get together and make sure that one person gets accepted to a lower tier before they can be accepted to the next tier.

I think weebly is somewhat correct. but i’m not entirely sure. All i know is that berkeley really values diversity and unique people who are willing to “get over their past” and become stronger.

if we’re talking about transfers, it should be noted that berkeley admitted significantly less transfers this year than UCLA did (3000 as opposed to 5000)

also, their admit process is pretty weird. My brother got into berkeley but rejected from UCLA for undergrad, and also got rejected from UCLA for grad school but got into yale and harvard.

i was rejected from berkeley though however. kinda ironic if you ask me :p
