the problem with schools like NYU, Brown, Stanford, etc. is that they all get applications that match your sophomore and junior years, except these other applicants did it every year, not just two. i’m sure its not your fault you did poorly freshman year, but these colleges are so selective.tere are topish schools who may be able to see past your struggles freshman year, but I dont think any of the schools listed will. since you are from NYC, try schools like

Marist
Manhattan
Wheaton
Quinnipiac
Trinity
BU as a high reach maybe

Hope this helps!

I agree that schools like Stanford, NYU, Cornell and Brown are very competitive and would be considered high reaches. I am not familiar with the requirements for the other schools you listed except for SUNY New paltz since my son is a transfer student there. You should be good to go there and I am a big fan of the school. If I can answer any questions about it, feel free to ask. What are you looking to major in?

Okay so here’s the deal, in my opinion. Yes, your stats are lower than the average applicant, however, elevenoclock is wrong in suggesting BU as a “high reach”. That is ridiculous. I have friends that got into BU with stats significantly lower than yours. People get into this hypnotic state from being on CC too much where they believe a 2200 SAT is common in college admissions. It is not. If your guidance counselor could explan the issues you had freshman year, your chances for the schools elevenoclock listed would be near 100%. However, Stanford, Brown, and Cornell are different animals altogether. I suggest you forget about Stanford, as it is extremely hard to get into anyways. I would keep Cornell, and definitely keep NYU. Also, SUNY New Paltz seems like a legit school for you as well. Just keep your grades up, your ECs are good, and keep your head up!! For you, a lot hangs on recs and essays, so make sure they are amazing!!! (especially the essays!)

thank you so much dreamsofivy. after reading the neg comments (which I dont mind at all and I’m glad youre being honest) I felt a lot better.

any more takers?

As for NYU, I would say it’s a match if you weren’t from NYC because they have so many NYers applying so the applicant pool is more competitive.
Cornell could also be a match, from what I have seen they put emphasis on SAT scores and yours are good.
Occidental you have a good chance at also, because you are from the east coast.
SUNY New Paltz is you safety I’m assuming?
Boston shouldn’t be too hard either, but the rest may be reaches!
