How's DePauw and a few questions

I just came across this LAC. Would like to know more about it from the students, parents and alumni.

  1. How rigorous are the academics and professors? Especially the Economics/Finance dept.?
  2. How's the Finance/Economics major program here? How quantitative is it? Is there OCR?
  3. Is DePauw in a safe area?
  4. How's the Financial Aid here? Especially for a high stat, EFC 0 student? The NPC estimates a gap of $3,000 per annum.
  5. Does DePauw practice front loading of grants?
  6. Overall, how's the college life/Greek and competitiveness here? I understand the Greek life is dominant, but does it interfere with a non-greek's life? Are there crime/safety issues arising due to out of control Greek life here?

In short, what is your opinion of a student’s happiness and satisfaction here if he’s an independent, introverted, likes to do things lone, calm and heavily academically oriented?

The description of your son is similar to my son who is a student there. He is quiet, introverted, and academically oriented. DePauw is a school for such these types of kids. Academics are top notch and with small classrooms, students have to participate. There are outstanding faculty from top schools such as Stanford, Georgetown, Michigan, etc who are amazing teachers and care about the students. University does a great job of encouraging involvement. Greek system offers something for everyone–especially leadership–which the school really encourages. We live in a college town and it is much tamer at DePauw than most college campuses.

  2. How's the Finance/Economics major program here? How quantitative is it? Is there OCR? Especially the Economics/Finance dept.? Finance and Economics are great. Very rigorous and quantitative. Definitely not easy. Is OCR ==Office of Civil Rights?
  3. Is DePauw in a safe area? Very safe.
  4. How's the Financial Aid here? Especially for a high stat, EFC 0 student? The NPC estimates a gap of $3,000 per annum. Financial aid is generous. most get $20K. Gap is more like $4000.
  5. Does DePauw practice front-loading of grants? No--I don't think so.
