How's Everyone Doing?

Son finally completed his CFA yesterday. I’m not sure how his score will stack up:

BB Throw: 69’
Pull-ups: 16
Shuttle: 7.9 sec
Sit-ups: 85
Push-ups: 73
Mile: 7:00 minutes

He’s done with everthing except the MOC interviews. Had his AFROTC scholarship interview last week. All of the back-up college apps are in. So now he waits and enjoys being a senior.

How’s everyone else doing in this marathon process?

I know now that even if he doesn’t get an appointment, AFA has already touched his life. I think it would be safe to say that the AFA has done the same for each of you. As a single dad, I am proud of the path my son has chosen. Heck, I’m proud of each of you - making such mature decisions at such an early age.

Good luck!

I'm done with everything for AFA but I am only about halfway through the AFROTC stuff.

That's outstanding.

The first board for AFROTC isn't until December 12 - so you have some time. They're pretty quick about scheduling an interview once all of your paperwork is completed.

Gig 'em!

Of course TAMU is on the list.

Ive taken the ACT/SATs a couple times now, done the writing, personal data, activities, drug statement, ALO interview, HS transcript (red form) and CFA. I also have 1 teacher evaluation form done. One i am currently waiting on to finish and another is fixing a problem (<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=101139)%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=101139)</a>.</p>

In Illinois, my first MOC application is due October 14th and i have all the stuff ready for that one just need one evaluation form finished by my boss at work.

My next MOC date is Nov 11th and that one is much more straight forward. 2 Letters of rec, an essay and transcript, etc.

My final MOC is Dec 2nd but i just need one letter of rec since they kept my nomination file from last year (i got my nomination from this person). They actually contacted ME regarding a renomination. I talked with the secretary there a while back asking a few questions. In the end she basically said, for people who are who a nomination the previous year and are reapply for a nomination, no one thus far has been rejected. Thats not to say i wont get a nomination from this source, but i have some odds stacked in my favor (especially if i did it last year and im more competitive this year).

My only problem is DoDMERB hasnt done anything with my medical status. I sent in a waiver request back in july and they still havent gotten back to me. Fortunatly in January my medical status will be cleared (12 months from any anti-depressants) but i want the peace of mind of getting everything cleared.

So that is where i am at.

For me, all my academy paperwork is done and in, congressional applications are in, and I'm finished with DODMERB.

I'm accepted into my fallback school and am working on the ROTC appliaction and the app's for those colleges.

It's an odd feeling when you realize your basically done applying to the academy. For something I've strived for for so long, it's amazing the applications are already over (though I won't complain). It seems like just yesterday that I was getting ready to apply for summer seminar.

You echo how my son feels. Everything has gone so smooth it's almost anticlimactic. I know he's glad to be done with all of the application essays. That red hat seems closer and closer.

I will say that he spoke to his AFA counselor almost weekly as the paperwork filtered in. She's been absolutely fantastic. The same for the wonderful coordinator at our congressman's office. They both took an active interest in his file and its completion.

Hey Snip - sounds like you have the teacher rec problem on the ropes. Good luck with DODMERB - hope you get it cleared soon!

I have all the forms in except the CFA (which I am taking on Monday, I can max on 4 out of the 6, and above average on the other 2). I haven't had my Liaison Interview yet; he said that we're going to "wait for the Academy" before we have it, I don't know what that means. All my congressional stuff is in now too. Basically, except for a few things, It's just a waiting game now.

PatriotCPM - Good luck on the CFA - sounds like you're more than prepared.

My son's ALO did the same thing - waited for the Academy to pull the trigger and then scheduled the interview. They had met several times before - so it was pretty relaxed - only about an hour.

Let us know how it goes.

I have everything in except the CFA and I'm waiting for a previous physician to give us medical records to send in the remedial. Medical won't hurt me at all, I'm in the clear now, and have been for several years. Just a lot of little things when I was younger.

I'm working on my nomination essays and such, for all you in Texas, you know how thorough Senator Cornyn's app is.....the other two are just about complete and need to go. Should be done by the end of the week.

I'm still worried about my CFA, I am above average on 2, average on 2 and a little over minimum on 2. :( Anyone have some really good advice on the b-ball throw. It's killing me right now, I need some sort of technique, even my dad who is a lot stronger than me can't go futher than what I'm making!

On the brightside, I shaved 47 seconds off my mile in two weeks lol. It's under 8 min now.

For the B-Ball throw, just try to do it alot, and the technique your body "prefers" (as in which way you are most comfortable doing it) will reveal itself. Personally, I found that the more i did it, the most I got used to how to best throw it and i could throw a little further everytime. It's not necessarily about strength on this one, it's more how far back you can stretch and then how fast you can bring your arm around and fling it, to create the most momentum through the swing.

For me (it may be the same for you too, try it), the best way to do the throw was to lean back as far as possible and reach back with my arm (with ball cupped in my hand), then brought my torso up as fast as possible and kindof sidearm/overhead chucked, if that makes any sense, the ball a little.

I've tried chucking it lol I don't think I have found a way to max the distance to accelerate. I've going to try what someone else told me when I get the chance. Thinking about it, I have a short torso as well...I need to compensate for that.

Does it have to be completely overhand? If I side lob it somewhat I get another 10-15 feet lol.

Wish me luck!

In the Instruction Packet, it says "in an overhanded throwing motion", but I don't think the rule is so strict as your arm has to be exactly perpendicular to the floor. I think some sideways fluctuations won't really discount the throw. Anyways, yeah good luck with your CFA, try as hard as you possibly can. Do you know when you are taking it? I'm taking mine tommorow.

When your kneeling, make sure you are on your toes. Take the ball back as far as you can, and use your arm like a catapult.

I am planning on taking it in two weeks or so. I'm nervous about the mile, but I did take a chunk off it in this last two weeks, I can hope. Also, in my practices I'm working myself as hard as I can, I dry heave at the end of my run lol.

I really hope my shuttle run will improve on wood floor, I slide across the concrete and still make 9.1 seconds.

My PE teacher who gave me the PAE (or CFE as we call it now...) was a SFO in vietnam. He actually gave a good explaination about the basketball throw. He said it was to see if you can throw a grenade. Though he said a baseball would have been better and the only time he used grenades was underhand.

Just an interesting insight.

I just finished my CFA; I was pretty happy with the results. I got 80 feet for the bball throw, 7.8 seconds for the shuttle run, 10 pullups, 75 pushups, 95 crunches, and 4:50 for the mile run. Anyways, I realized the second after I closed the envelope that I forgot the put a sticker on the form-will this really matter? I had to write my name an social security number anyways, so will they not accept it without the sticker?

If your name and ssan are on there it should be fine.

About the basketball throw...it is a good measure of shoulder strength. I think most of us here who have done it multiple times know that there is a limit to what you can do. As hard as you try with good form, there seems to be a consistent range you'll hit.

The first time I tried the B-Ball throw, I think I got like 45 feet or something rediculous like that. Then after I had done it a few days, I got the coordination down and could throw it 60-70 feet just about everytime, 70 being a good throw and closer to 60 depending on wether it slipped off the side of my hand.

I deffinitely think you are at an advantage if you have big hands on this one. I don't and to keep hold if it I had to sort of hold it against my forearm so it wouldn't release before I was ready.

I'm doing it on my driveway as well, and we have an iron gate. So, I think I should go out into a more open area so I don't feel constricted by a small opening, I remember it helped when I did it at my sister's house. I'll be giving everyone's advice a try. Hopefully I can get over 54!
