How's my intended schedule? Pre-Haas/Stats maybe Econ

Math 53
Auroux, heard that he's an amazing teacher, taught at MIT

Stat 21
Ibser, have to take the class for Haas and I'd like to see if I really do want to double major in statistics

Music 27

Astron C10

This may sound ambitious, but I am aiming to get all A's (need a high GPA for Haas). Is that doable with this schedule?

Also, which classes should I phase 1? My calSO is this friday. Thanks guys

Why are you taking Math 53…it’s only a prereq for Stats. 1B would be better cause it covers both Stats and Haas (although u can skip out of it for Stats if u get a 5 on the BC exam, but you still need it for Haas no matter what)

I was under the impression that I already get credit for both Math 1A and 1B since I took the equivalent classes at a community college and they transfer over.

Although Haas says you still have to take 1B even if you get a 5 on calc BC, it said nothing about having to take 1B if you already took the class at a community college.

Plus, people have been saying that 1B is very hard and it’s better just to skip it.

Is this correct or am I misunderstanding?

Wow I had no idea that they changed it so either 16B or 1B was required. This sort or changes my plans. I’ve also heard that Math 1B is abnormally hard, and even people that did well in Calc BC and got 5’s have a tough time with it. If that is the case, would it be better to just take 16B? I also plan on doubling in Stats/Pre-business.

What exactly is the difference between 1B and 16B?

I took 1B this past semester and it was probably the hardest class I’ve taken in my life. Learn the tricks and do as many problem sets as you can. Its about being familiar with the tricks and applying them on the exam(s)/final.

Well actually I think the requirement is just ONE semester of calculus. It can be either 1A, 1B, 16A, or 16B.

It used to be that if you got a 5 on AP calculus BC, then you didn’t have to take calculus at all. But now they made it so that you only get credit for 1A or 16A, and you’d still have to take a semester of calculus at Berkeley, 1B or 16B

All I know about difference between the 1 series and the 16 series is that 16 is easier haha. But the 1 series is a prerequisite to the statistics major

Yeah, which is why I don’t want to take it… haha

Does getting a 5 on Calc BC cover the 1 series for Stat? I don’t still have to take 1A do I…because I was thinking if my 1 series is covered for Stat, then I can just take the easier 16B for Haas and not worry about 1B.

Yeah I believe a 5 gets you out of math 1A and math 1B, for statistics majors. Probably a good idea to just take 16B for Haas then.

Does anyone know if my community college credits allow me to get out of the calculus requirement for Haas?

If your willing to take math 53 then you shouldn’t be scared of math 1B either. I’ve heard strange things about the two classes. A lot of people say that math 53 is intensely harder than math 1b while others say its easier. But overall I think that they are both pretty hard classes and not too far apart from each other. The fail rate for math 53 may be lower because the people who failed math 1b probably decided to not pursue further math courses.

@Handlebars: it is a very manageable schedule.

Thanks for the advice guys. I honestly don’t feel too worried about math 53 if i get Auroux, after reading the comments about him. He has a 4.8 out of 5 on ratemyprofessor, the highest I’ve ever seen haha. Makes me feel pretty secure (although I won’t know for sure until I try)

Alright, I still have a few questions if anyone can answer them:

Which classes should I phase 1? My calSO is on Friday so I don’t have much time.

Do my community college credits allow me to get out of the calculus requirement for Haas? I guess if nobody knows, then I’ll ask the counselors at calso.

Thanks

Hi, I’m also a pre-haas, and I was wondering if my schedule (17 units) was okay…
Chinese 1Y (5)
Env Sci 10 (3)
ESPM 24 (1)
History 6A (4)
Sociol 1 (4)

Or is it too much for fall, first year? And since I’m pre-haas, is it a bad idea if I start off my freshmen year with no pre-haas requirements? (i was hoping to take Econ 1, UGBA 10, Math 16B but I heard the curve is better in the spring for UGBA…and I’d prefer more selection in teachers for Math 16B/Econ 1 according to ratemyprofessors…)
