How's my list?

About Me:
- 22 years old living WITH MOM
- acquired A.S. from community college with 3.4 GPA
- looking to transfer and work towards a M.A. in psychology

The goal (school):
- cheapest out of state tuition (must leave Mom, but must do it practically)
- cheap cost of living (I am NOT living in a dorm so I must live cheaply on my own... goodbye Cali schools)
- easy enough for me to get in with my academic history (I'll do better in a less competitive environment)

so, in a nutshell: cheap tuition, cheap state living, high acceptance rate, still good academics :)

The list so far:

University of Oregon:
85 percent acceptance rate
very cheap out of state tuition
highly ranked undergrad psych program

University of Minnesota--Twin Cities
same as above, but in Minnesota. much bigger population than oregon
this school seems to be very highly accredited academically! and a huge bargain for OOS transfers
affordable and accredited

University of Wisconsin--Madison
too selective for my credentials? bit more expensive
probably out of my league

University of Washington
good psych program
more expensive and selective than oregon/minnesota
possible I might get in. overall a bit better of a school than Oregon it seems. it'll cost an extra $7k a semester though. it seems this school is a bit more active with the community via their psychology department

So, how am I doing so far? I'm trying to pick a school away from Mom, with affordable out of state tuition, with highly ranked academics. So far, U of Minnesota and U of Oregon seem like hugely academic bargains. I'm looking the cheapest education that is still widely recognized. I started my list by researching the best undergraduate psychology programs and narrowing from there.

SUNY is a pretty good out of state bargain. Does anyone know about the psychology programs?

For psychology (and just in general), Minnesota and Wisconsin are stronger than Oregon. IMHO, if a school’s too easy to get into, you don’t really want to go there.

Also, look into Illinois which has a top ten psychology department.

Good luck!

I agree with interestingguy’s post on going to a school too easy to get into. I left Purdue of finances to my current school, if you are in the East Coast then you heard of JWU. It is REALLY easy to get into this school, like even a 2.5 GPA and a 1000 SAT will get you in. It’s not that great being around people who are not that into academics or care about school. It’s quite annoying but gives you an advantage since your class rank would be higher. I wouldn’t look at UIllinois though since it is CRAZY expensive for both OOS and in-state.

What’s your state school OP? I would highly consider UMinny though since it is well respected, has great academics, cheap OOS tuition, and you get the big college experience.
