I've just been accepted to GaTech (undeclared engineering) and I will most likely attend here this fall. So, I checked their course catalog and here's what they suggest:

SUGGESTED 1ST YEAR SCHEDULE - FIRST SEMESTER HRS
MATH 1501 CALCULUS I 4
ENGL 1101 ENGLISH COMPOSITION I 4
CHEM 1310 GENERAL CHEMISTRY 3
CS 1371 COMPUTING FOR ENGINEERS 3
GT 1000 FRESHMAN SEMINAR 1
TOTAL SEMESTER HOURS = 15

SUGGESTED 1ST YEAR SCHEDULE - SECOND SEMESTER HRS
MATH 1502 CALCULUS II 4
ENGL 1102 ENGLISH COMPOSITION II 4
PHYS 2211 INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS I 3
HIST 2111 or 2112 or POL 1101 3
WELLNESS 2
TOTAL SEMESTER HOURS = 16

How does this look? Will this be a killer for my first year experience? Many advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Ummm....if this is what they suggest, why are you questioning us as to whether it will be a killer? Do you have a choice? I would assume most kids will be taking a load like this. Does this include your AP credits? Sorry, I don't understand why you are questioning what they are telling you to do.....

I've been looking at my schedule, and my first semester is going to be 17 hours. Fifteen is a good course load. From what my friends and everyone tell me, Tech is hard. Take some classes you like combined with some "requirements" so you have a balance. If you only take classes you hate, you'll think the semester is hard because you'll be unmotivated. If you take classes you like, you'll think it's worthwhile.

15 hours is average for Tech. but Tech in general is difficult anyway :)

And honestly, I've been told that GT 1000 is basically used as a GPA buffer.

That first semester schedule is pretty much what everyone takes their first semester. As for second semester...well it depends if you PASS a few first semester courses to take Calc II and Physics, but you'll learn all that...plenty of time.

A hint...each school at Tech is required to put out a 'recommended course schedule' like that, but don't go at it to the T. Some classes you do have to take certain semesters but you don't have to cram in history or wellness your first year.

As with everyone said, it's exactly what it is 'Recommended.'

You can choose what you wish to take as long as you have the
Pre-Reqs for the class. Obviously you want to look at the schedule
so you don't end up screwing yourself over a lot.

And whatever you, do NOT take GT 1000. My friends who took it
HATED it because that class (though it took up the least credit hours...
1 I think), ended up spending a good 3-5 hours per week on that.

For a little grade boost, I think that time can actually be better
spent making friends and finding out what else Tech has to offer.

Whether or not GT 1000 is "worthwhile" depends on what major you are. I came in as Computational Media and we had a GT 1000 class specifically for us. It was almost zero work at all. I know some other majors have their own GT 1000 class as well. The generic one is not worth it. The biggest thing I learned from my GT 1000 class was "omg get the hell out of this major."

Your schedule is actually pretty good- very manageable. It will be hard, but just because Tech is hard. You're gonna have to work, but what you're signed up for your first semester is a good intro to Tech.

As for GT1000, it depends. I was in a special section on leadership, and it was actually very useful, almost no work outside of class, and an easy A. But other people have had horrible experiences. I know that UEC (undecided engineering) has some specific sections of GT1000 that are intended to help you narrow down your major, but I have no clue how effective they are.

credit hours is what actually, hours you sit in the class?? sorry I'm not attending GT though I wish to soon...lol....I was also told that a major and minor will take 18 hours a semester to graduate in 4 yrs....how hard is 18 hours a semester??

Can credits knock out anything, even English and stuffs...does anybody know if IB SL exams give credits? And can someone tell me how much time can be knocked off with a 5 in Calc BC Phy C mech and Chem? Is 7 in IB Math HL, Phy HL and Chem HL gonna add anymore credits to that AP combo just mentioned..

i did IB too, no credit is given for SL.
doing AP and HL in the same subjects is kind of wasting a bit of time no?
if you know you are going to GT, I would only recommending it if you know you could not get the HL scores required.

I also have another question: I haven't taken any APs or IB but I read in the url above and it said that I can take GaTech's math exam if I have taken calculus in high school and achieved SAT math score of 600 or higher. But when do I take this exam in GaTech? Also, is math the only placement exam that GaTech requires?

Thanks for all of your comments. But I have another question: when do we actually register for Fall 2008 classes? I've already signed up for the last FASET Orientation date (since I live outside US) and I would like to know when I would be able to register for classes.
