I may move out to Cali to attend a cc for the fall 10. How does it compare to other California community colleges?

Orange Coast College is better.

GO PIRATES!

In what ways is it “better”? Please elaborate.

GO THERE!
i did a year at SBCC, living in isla vista.
do it.
go, and with haste.

in a nutshell, a few square miles of closed-off, million dollar beachfront property inhabited by tens of thousands of college students between the ages of 18 and 24. then you go 8 miles down the road to SBCC a few times a week and take classes literally overlooking the ocean - also included among the amenities that come along with the beach –> women.

knowledgeable profs, friendly people, decent transfer rates… and anyone who says that the partying - of which there is a lot - is ‘too much to handle’ doesn’t have even a shred of discipline in them. there are also some naysayers who complain about the rent being too expensive, but you can share a room at garden court for ~$375 / month.

i can’t stress this enough: if you have the opportunity and the means to live in isla vista and attend SBCC for a year or two, do it without thinking twice. if you like things, and fun, and stuff… you’ll like it there…

SBCC is one of the few community colleges in the state where you can still have the traditional college experience by living in Isla Vista. If that’s what you’re looking for it’s a great choice. While most community colleges in California are basically 100% commuters, SBCC has a significant out of town population too.

I’m not here to belittle any other CCC’s, but I would say your best bet is Santa Monica College. It has the number 1 transfers to UCLA and UC schools.

Beautiful and clean campus. 5 minute bus ride to the beach.

SMC does send more transfers to UCs, but that’s only because it has more students. It doesn’t have a higher transfer rate than other CCCs. Last year my CCC had a higher transfer rate to UCLA than SMC, but only had 40 accepted, as opposed to SMC’s 1000+.
The campus is nice though.

I attend another college in Santa Barbara, so I don’t know much about the academics, but I can let you in on a few things.

-It is one of those few community colleges that is not a commuter school. People from all over the US, even from other countries, attend SBCC.
-The people there are chill. I’ve met lots of friendly, down to earth kids from there. Yes, some are your stereotypical partiers, but they are the minority.
-It’s close to downtown and State Street, which is beautiful and has a great variety of shops and restaurants.
-The beach. Need I say more.

So from a location and social standpoint, it’s a winner.

It’s football/track stadium would even make UCSB’s Harder Stadium jealous:
