How's the campus?

I am seriously considering NYU for its strong communications program. I have done extensive research, but neglected to ask about the campus. Is it very urban? Is it nice? How is the surrounding area? And the dorms?

Thanks for any input!

"Is it very urban?" You can't get much more urban than the center of Manhattan. NYU is scattered throughout Greenwich Village (and beyond) with Washington Square park sort of the center. It's in the middle of the city so yes, it's definitely urban. It's not a defined campus. The Village is nice but it's a city so you have both the good and bad of living in a city. I would not recommend anyone make their decision about attending without having visited first. I think that's the case with any college but especially one like NYU where you aren't really going to get the typical college experience. There are a huge number of dorms so it's difficult to review them in general. Some are nice, some are ok, and some are awful. Probably pretty much like at most schools. I love being in the city but not everyone does. You really should visit.

NYU pretty much owns everything around Washington Sq. and good portion of property in Greenwich Village, its the 2nd largest landowner in NY after the Catholic church. While there is no defined campus since NYU is mixed in with Greenwich Village, I would certainly say there is an NYU area centered around Washington Square...which is probably nicer than the majority of college quads.

As for the dorms, on the whole they are great...though of course there is a range. One thing to note, all dorms at NYU have private bathrooms, no common bathrooms at all. Many suites have kitchens, living rooms/common areas, and some are quite spacuious. Relative to college dorms as a group, NYU residence halls are clearly superior.

And yes its urban...if you don't want urban, NYU is probably not for you.

Everyone says that NYU has no campus, but ask any New Yorker where NYU is and they will direct you to Washington Square Park. NYU has an AMAZING campus and there is a campus feel. If you go to the park during the day you get the feeling that it is the quad and NYU students own it. People say that buildings are dispersed all around the city but for the most part all the buildings you will have class in are within a five minute walk.
