can anyone tell me about w&m computer science degree? info on research opportunities for undergrad. anyone have info about internship opportunities or job placement #'s. any info appreciated

I’m copying and pasting information on the Computer Science Department that we keep in our lobby area for prospective students. Hope it’s helpful.

Computational science focuses on theories and techniques to collect, analyze, and produce useful information. Rapid advances in the field have positioned computational science as the mathematics of the twenty-first century with broad application to real-life problems in virtually every other field. Knowledge of the logic and capabilities of computing is an essential tool for the well-rounded, liberally educated person.

Undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science complete a structured program that encompasses the main questions: Given the enormous difficulty of writing large programs, what kinds of computer languages can be easily specified, easily understood, and yet mechanically translated? What are the most advantageous ways of distributing computing loads over a collection of networked processors? Are some functions inherently harder to compute than others? Do functions exist that cannot be computed? How is knowledge best represented in a computer?

The department offers an unusual 5-year program that combines the undergraduate B.S. or B.A. degree and the M.S. in computer science, essentially condensing a two-year master’s degree program into just one year of intensive graduate study.

Student Activities & Research
Our faculty conduct research in the areas of algorithms, computer systems and networking, high performance computing, modeling and simulation, programming languages and compilers, scientific computing, and scientific visualization. As opportunities arise, students are invited to work with faculty on these projects. We also offer multidisplinary research opportunities in Computational Science and Computational Operations Research. All students are invited to participate in our local chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery, the largest organization of computing professionals.

Careers
Trained in logical thinking, creative problem-solving, and using structures to represent and process information, our undergraduate majors are well positioned for success in the sciences, engineering, business, entertainment, education, and more. A significant number pursue graduate-level study in law, medicine, or a field related to computer science, sometimes with the goal of obtaining a Ph.D. and teaching at the university level.
