How's the CS department at Brown

How does it compare to the University of Washington? Is there plenty of opportunities for undergradate research? Are the professors really knowledgeable?

Thanks

Please use the search function-- this has come up a lot lately.

it’s one of the best anywhere – amazing faculty, classes, facilities, and post graduation job prospects. everything you can ask for

Washington is so much better than Brown in CS. Microsoft takes a lot of grads from UWash.

Funny how we had an open bar at the campus bar just two weeks ago being paid for by Microsoft, after they have already hired people from this years class that they’re using to build good will and a good reputation amongst CS people at Brown in hopes of continuing to attract top Brown students.

High hire rates of UW CS students by Microsoft is a direct result of geographical proximity…UW campus is 20 minutes from Microsoft’s main campus. A lot of UW grads are going to be applying there.

Tech companies heavily recruit Brown CS students. I’m on the CS listserv and get bombarded with e-mails about oo come to this event or this event or this event or this event by employer X, Y, and Z (Microsoft, Google, Apple…) where they will woo you with nice nice things in hopes that you will pick them to apply to.

Our CS dept is sick; I’d go so far as to say it’s probably the best undergrad dept here in terms of how well they have everything together and the level of jobs grads end up with (disclaimer: not a CS major and I think my own dept is great). UW might be one of the best for grad school, but Brown is nothing to sneeze at and the connections some profs here can hook students up with are great, not to mention all the on-campus recruiters. I took intro CS as a junior so I got stuck on the CS listserv, and Google, Facebook, MS, Apple, etc. are all regular visitors to Brown. I also know a couple of people staying on for a fifth-year masters, and they all have great jobs lined up.
