I know Business isn't the school's strongest suit, but I've heard a bit about the Econ major being pretty decent here, although I'd like to hear from an Econ major or someone who knows the department well enough. Can anyone weigh in for me?

Anyone? At all? It’d be nice to get some feedback.

Word on the street is that it’s not the best. Apparently, you’re better off combining it with something else, or going somewhere else if you only want Economics.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Eh, thanks though. I’m gonna look into Information Systems here.

to be honest econ department is really tiny here. I would not recommend going for the major here, and if you do i suggest double up for business.

ISE has a business/economics specialization. It’s not as intensive as CSE, so you could probably double major.

Hmm. I wonder how ISE is here? You heard anything about it?

It’s a B.S. in information technology, essentially. It’s more focused on maintaining and developing systems than the guts that run them. The website

[Stony Brook University - Department of Computer Science](http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/)

has plenty of more info, including a list of courses. ISE is offered by the CSE department. They’re similar enough so that you’re not allowed to double major in both.

Don’t bother with the economics major here. There are only two good professors in the department. I used to be an economics major and ended up dropping it for Business Management.

The Business major here has amazing professors and a number of fields to specialize in.

You’re required to pick up another major or minor if you do business though, so have fun choosing!

Sounds like Econ is out of the question, then. ISE sounds like fun :)

If you’re good with math, you can probably do full on CSE.

Honestly, I’m only half-decent at Math. I can do Calculus and Trig just fine, as well as Algebra, but Geometry screws me over and the highest level Calc I’ve done is probably simple Integrals. I’ve never had an AP class in Math, although I’m Honors, and my SAT was pretty mediocre at only a 550.

Decent at Math? Sure. Good or great? Depends, more often than not I won’t be too great.

Unless you go into graphics, games, or simulations, you’d more likely need discrete math and statistics in a career. Doesn’t seem like you’ve taken either, and I think ISE requires them anyway.
