how's the food?

We were served surf & turf and banana splits on I-day!
You lucky bastage! I can't even remember IF I ate on I-Day. :(

Surf and turf was one of our favorites. Yum-yum-YUM!

The ice cream was excellent, even with the saltpeter additive!
Oh, SNAP! Now you've gone and done it! Saltpeter! LOL! :D

Zaphod,

I didn't say we ate the surf & turf on I-day. However, it did look great on the platters. Our last supper was the cold cut sandwiches we had for noon meal. We were told by the plebe detail: "Enjoy this meal. It will be your last meal in a long time."

LOL! Stop it, man! I've got people sticking their heads into my office wondering why I'm laughing!

:D

My daughter never asked and doesnt comment. She looks fine and actually gained a few pounds during Plebe summer. The only thing she ever says is that she doesnt eat in on Sunday and an occassional evening, in order to stay in her room and get caught up. Not asking for food care packages. I assume all this adds up to : getting what I need Mom, no worries.

There is a REASON why the best chow in the Navy is served aboard submarines.

One of the reasons I spent my years on the boats. Great food and an open galley 24hrs/day!

Zaph,

I am pretty sure the food quality has changed immensley since you were here. The food is NOT always bad. Milk is being brought out at room temperature and sometimes outdated, serving sizes are extremely small (i.e. you can only have one pancake just over the size of a CD), King Hall bought wrong plugs which don't carry enough current to the devices they need to use....the logistics/supply is horrendous.

King Hall definitely is not one of the places with the finest food in the Navy...I was only at three places this summer and the food at all three (Quantico, Pt. Loma, and NASNI) was exponentially better. Furthermore, the food I ate in the mess decks on my surface cruise was significantly better than KH.

Oh and at some meals, I'd rather eat an MRE...for example, tonight!

Christ, that's awful to hear. :(

Is it because of the fact you guys are stuck eating in Dahlgren while they redo King, or is it really because the Sup needs to fire the Suppo and get someone else in there?

If it's really that bad, then I'm going to have to see about getting up there to see for myself then write a letter to the Sup. The best I can do, but I'll do it on the off-chance it might help.

I'm simply speachless. If there was one thing we could speak positively about overall, it was King Hall. It wasn't gourmet, but it sure as hell beat the averages.

Wow. :(

Well, as you mentioned it is a hard job...I know the staff is trying, but they really need to survey the MIDN more. There are company reps that meet once a month with MFSD director. They have had some bad shortcomings, but they do send out emails to apologize.

Dahlgren is not really a huge problem, other than being scrunched together and waiting a little longer to get served. I am sure it takes a toll on MFSD, though!

Yeah, this is what we call in the Process Control business a "special case". You can't go too hard on them due to the circumstances.

Sucks you have to be there for it. Hopefully it will all be better next year.

BTW, how do you manage to get on here? I thought the folks in Ward Hall had blocked CC from the USNA network?

Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I wish there were more Mids on here to correct this old fuddy-duddy alum. :)

jadler03....to provide some background about the "1 pancake" story....my kiddo said it was a blunder by the kitchen. Usually they cook X number of pancakes along with eggs, sausage, and all the rest. That day, they cooked the same number of pancakes without everything else - and that's why they limited the mids to ONE per person. So it was someone's math skills - not poor cooking for that fiasco.

Boy, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at THAT butt-chewing! :D

peskemom,

That was an entire different incident. I am talking about on a regular basis...they need to put out a table or bar with extra pancakes so that if you want more than 1, you can get up and get more. However, you are only served one right now and don't think about stealing from another tray!

There is other food...but they should be providing more pancakes or french toast.

jadler03,

When I was a mid, we used ice cubes to chill our milk. The milk was always fresh from the Naval Academy Dairy. Outdated milk would indicate that there is either a problem with the supplier or the food service officer doesn't know how to maintain a just-in-time inventory of fresh food.

You can't blame this problem on King Hall. The engineering firm that prepared the plans and specs for the renovation project probably specified the wrong electrical devices based on faulty criteria provided by the Public Works Department. They'll get it right eventually. They are called change orders -- contractors love them!

Well they should check the dates before placing them on the table, regardless.
I also forgot to mention the incident where 60 MIDN got food poisoning earlier this year.

Good grief! What the HELL is going on up there?

You're assuming those people can read. If they're anything like what we had there in my day.....

I don't know what these mids want for free. Just drink it like a man and quit bellyachin. ;)

jadler03,
Thank you for explaining part of the problem with food service at USNA. I wonder if it's any better at the other SAs? Have you talked to any exchange mids? All I know is that I've sent a lot of food from California to Maryland and will be very happy when my mid can drive to Trader Joe's (across from Annapolis mall) next year. Last year a plebe from our area had food delivered several times a week (I tried not to look surprised when his large-diamond-wearing mother explained this to me). How do you supplement what is offered in King Hall/Dahlgren?

Usually: Drydock, Steerage, Mid Store, Vending Machines.
I think USMA's is good.

I noticed they fixed up Steerage since my day. They renovated it while I was there (it was a real dump at first), but now it looks even better.

One thing, though. If the food at King Hall is considered unhealthy, I can only guess what Steerage is like. It was famous for serving heart attacks on a plate back in the day.

Drydock isn't much better (I ate there just a few weeks ago. While the dining area has changed, the restaurant itself sure hasn't.)
