Is it as good as Cornell's, or is it really Southern esque. I LOVE southern food, and North Carolina is known for producing it at a reasonable price. So, how's the food at Duke? A 9? An 8?

Feshman year it is a 7-8 (Marketplace), all other years it is a 10. Duke has a diversity of selection that is rare in most schools. Believe me, you will be happy about the food when you get here, though it is run differently than Cornell (tons of different merchants on and off campus that are part of food plan).

AWESOME!!! So, is it real South style (i.e. barbecue everything, soul food, etc.) or more eclectic? Im already enrolled for '09, so I just was wondering.

when you said "though it is run differently than Cornell (tons of different merchants on and off campus that are part of food plan)" did you mean that that's how cornell is or how duke is?

i stayed with a friend of mine at cornell over break....

basically, their (cornell's) campus run food services are better than duke's. I found their cafeteria on north campus to kill the marketplace. that being said, you learn to judge what's good and what isn't, and there's always something edible. plus, i'm a huge fan of breakfast and the large selection of cereal, fruit, etc. is great (oh, and there's always grits and biscuits/gravy)

we have a bunch of merchants we can have deliver, and a lot of indpendent places all over that are really good. that's something that cornell definitely doesn't have.

we usually go to UNC

to eat? lol ahaha You travel 8 miles to get a bite to eat?

BTW, when I visited the thing for accepted students, there were a LOT of vendors there on the weekends on West Campus. The food was deliciouso and very Sout style (hotdogs, grilled hamburgers)!

PS: They even had funnel cake!!!! FREAKIN FUNNEL CAKE!!!!!!! Yummy!

The funnel cake was probably from a vendor for Springternational, which only took place the weekend you were there.
Regarding going to UNC to eat, I guess Amused likes to travel for her food, most people stay local or on campus.
Merchants on Points is an awesome way to get food delivered to your dorm from vendors off campus. We get a booklet in the beginning of the year with all the menus from vendors who participate. I use it all the time.
Food on campus is pretty good. The Marketplace is nice and all, but it does get a little redundant.
The Loop (homemade pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches, etc.) Subway, the Great Hall (a bigger version of the Marketplace), Alpine Bagels, Pauly Dogs (he does amazing things with hot dogs), Armadillo Grill (Great Mexican food), McDonalds, Alpine Atrium (people are obsessed with the smoothies), Ricks Diner (24 hour diner in a dorm), and Starbucks are a bunch of the options you have on West Campus.

I forgot to mention Chick-Fil-A and the Perk (coffee shop in Perkins) on West and Grace's Cafe (Chinese food) on Central and Trinity Cafe (another coffee shop) on East and a bunch more food places in the Engineering Complex.

what about some good ol' texas brisket/bbq? i'll definitely be craving that.

yeah....sanford deli in the pubpol building is awesome (not only good food, but literally the nicest people you will ever meet work there), then there's quenchers in wilson gym on west (smoothies and a fresh cut fruit....mmm, kiwi, pineapple, oranges, cantaloupe, etc), and over in pratt there's blue express (some of the best food on campus, with a mediterranean flair), and twinnies (lots of sandwiches). and once you're 21, you can get beer they have on tap.

and if you want real southern bbq, you'll be going off campus. however, now q-shack sets up in GA down under on friday/sat nights and serves some decent bbq (at least they were a couple of weeks ago...i think they still are).

and for those of you who enjoy mexican food, cosmic cantina (off campus, but close to east) is about as authentic and inexpensive as it gets. and they're open til 4am.
