I'm not a perfect student. I'll probably have a 95% W GPA (my school doesn't send UW with transcript for some reason) with around a 2000 SAT (taking it in May), and sit 34/332 as my rank. (frustrated at that, because I know I could have been under 15 if I had worked harder in freshman year)

Loads of AP's and advanced courses, I'm an African American Male from NY, and I doubt I will get any need based financial aid?

How good is UNC with merit aid? Generous, or selective??

I think that even with your URM status you’re going to need to get your SATs up to be in the running for merit aid as an OOS applicant. You’d definitely have a bit if a bump in the overall admission process but most of the big merit winners have much higher SAT scores. If you can work hard to get the SATs over 2100 (especially the “original” CR and Math sections since UNC doesn’t put a lot of emphasis on the new writing section) and do all you can do to get yourself back into the top ten percent of your class since class rank is also an important factor.

Just to clarify, without URM status your SATs would not be highly competitive in the OOS pool just for admission. OOS admission to UNC can be tougher than some Ivies and as tough as most highly selective private schools. URM will help you with admissions but you’ll need a bit of improvement to be a serious contender for good merit aid.

There not so generous with OOS merit aid. For everything they offer, it seems to me, (admissions, honors program, scholarships, etc.), they make sure that about 82% of the spots are given to instate students. I was accepted, I got into the honors program, and I got int to the Carolina Research Scholars Program, but I got NO money. So, my suggestion is to make every part of your essay (GPA, SAT scores, essay, extracurriculars, etc.) the best they can be to increase your chances of getting a scholarship because it is highly competitive. Good luck :)

Same here…great scholarships elsewhere, admitted OOS with no $ (high efc). Can’t justify it when looking at other offers. Make every word count!

jgirl0828 – Were you accepted in to the honors program at the time of admission acceptance? If not, when and how did UNC notify you about being accepted to the honors program, by email and/or postal mail? Thank you.
