So, I mainly want to attend UVA because of their Neuroscience program. It's a DMP, which is attractive, but it's awfully selective from what I see. What sort of GPA do you need to get into that program? Does it rely a lot of EC's? Also, anyone have experience with it; will it help me with the MCATS? Thanks guys:)

i applied…i wasn’t aware it was super selective…now i’m worried…i’m OOS

Well, do forgive me if I’m wrong, but I believe that you apply for the Neuroscience Major when you gain junior standing within the Univeristy. At least, that’s how it’s described on the course sequences online. I thought that you had to do a science realted major and then declare Neuroscience your 3rd year, and from what I know they accept around 30 students. I’m sure that with the the credentials, you shouldn’t have a tough time because they do search for diversity (Your are an OOS). Best of Luck!

you declare before your 3rd year I believe, unless I have been deceived

I know someone in my dorm who’s in it, and she’s super-qualified to do it

the neuroscience programme isn’t for the majority of pre-med students, unless you plan to do graduate-level research

We don’t admit College of Arts & Science students into a specific major. You’ll declare once you actually get here.

is that the same way for engineering?

Engineers apply for their major at the end of first year. I think that process will actually begin soon.

“Twenty-five rising third-year students will be selected each year to declare a major in Neuroscience. Application must be made in the student’s fourth semester by (1) meeting the course requirements for declaration—see below, (2) submitting a application by March 12, 2010, click here to download the application form, and (3) an essay describing why the applicant wishes to major in Neuroscience.”

Taken off of
[Declaration Requirements for Undergraduate Neuroscience at UVA](http://faculty.virginia.edu/neuroscience/declaration.html)

note “rising third year”

Yes, I now understand that. So does anyone know whether it’s a good premed major? Would I be better off majoring in Biology or Chemistry rather than Neuroscience? I plan to becoming a cardiolost, so neurology doesn’t relate to my preferred coursework.

The neuroscience programme is for future researchers in some sort of science (like say, neuroscience). Do you intend to pursue your own research once you get out of med school or pursue an MD/PhD programme? That’s what the programme is for.

ah you are right dean J (well, obviously!). i think i just selected that i would like to be a neurologist as a future occupation under the “future” thing in the common app. oops.

will definitely apply to neuroscience program though if accepted to UVA! 3rd year, i guess :)

the application deadline for my class is today.

I’m actually not too stressed. I think if I don’t make it in there are plenty of opportunities here to effectively craft a similar programme yourself. You won’t be able to call your programme “neuroscience”, but still.
