How's the theater scene?

I'm interested in applying SCEA to Stanford in the fall. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the extracurricular theater activity is like? It is definitely a passion of mine and a big consideration in my college decisions. Are there a lot of opportunities for theater (especially musical theater)? What about a capella groups or choirs? Thanks so much!

well, i'm going to stanford and am interested in theater, but i haven't really looked into it much, didn't get the chance. my impression is that stanford isn't a super big theater school, like yale for example, but they do have the Ram's Head society (i think that's right...) and stuff.

a capella, on the other hand, seems to be very big--they had a concert at admit weekend and it was great! i love fleet street, but they're all guys and i'm guessing you're a girl. there are plenty of a capella groups, if that's your thing, so I'm sure you can get involved in that.

Um, don't take anything I say as fact because this is mostly guessing and impressions on my part but I hope it helps!

i know nothing about theater... but i do know that a cappella groups are very active at stanford. i went to go visit the week before admit weekend, so my host arranged for me to sit in on a rehearsal of the stanford harmonics (which is a mixed group-- with guys and girls.) i stayed for a full hour (they let me pick which songs i wanted to hear from their repertoire!) and they were seriously awesome. so if you want to hear some clips from their brand-new album, check out www.stanfordharmonics.com. some other really good groups are mixed company (mostly pop) and everyday people (r&b/soul). hope this helps!

glinda, if you are really into theater, then I would advide you to look at a university like Yale. Theater is one of Stanford's weak points, unfortunately.

hmmm, I have a theater-oriented friend who goes to Stanford and seems to love the theater program there. She's only been there for a year, and she's gotten involved in all sorts of shows (mostly directing and stage-managing, but some acting too? I'm not sure, I haven't talked to her about it recently)

... I know she sometimes posts on CC... I don't think she's around right now, but if I see her, I'll ask if she's got any input to give.

(and btw, yes, we do have a good theater program at Yale, as far as I know. But then again, I'm not the best person to ask... I'm a science major, so I don't really know these things...)

Thanks for all of the input! I like Yale very much, but I'm a legacy at Stanford so I thought I'd apply there early. I will most definitely be applying to Yale RD though!

bump bump bump

what else do you want to know?
