hows the weather in pittsburgh?

How cold does it get in the winters?

As cold/colder than Boston?

Nope....not nearly as cold as Boston! In the last two years, we've gotten more ice than snow. We do have our share of pretty cold days though, it doesn't seem to last for too long. But not usually until January or February. The last two winters were pretty mild IMO. We haven't had a big dumping of snow since 2004!! We do have lots of grey days though.

That dumping actually canceled classes if I recall.

I think the problem with Pittsburgh winters is lack of sun even more than the cold.

2331, I agree totally! I think that's why 2 out of my 3 kids chose to go to college in the Philadelphia area. I hear if its not raining there, the sun is out! That alone is enough to keep me smiling!!!

last week it snowed...today it was gorgeous!

v. confusing

Pittsburgh is on average slightly colder than Boston. The monthly averages in January for Pittsburgh are

High: 37 F
Low: 20 F

Boston's averages for the same month are

High: 36 F
Low: 22 F

Deviation from the averages may be large though. During cold snaps, temperatures in January may fall to the 5-14 F range. Conversely, I remember "warm winters" when daytime temperatures occasionally went up to almost 50.

I forget if it did or didn't, but I know the only time CMU's ever closed its doors for the day has been when it was asked by the mayor of Pittsburgh to shut down to keep its employees off of the streets.

Also, I really wouldn't go by just temperature for averages, since both cities are quite windy and the wind chill is probably a much more accurate measure for how cold the cities feel.
