im going to be a freshman in the fall and this is my fall quarter schedule of classes:

Chem 14A
Spanish 5
History 8A
Fiat Lux Zen Buddhism
Calculus 32A

How are these classes in terms of difficulty and will this load be difficult to work with first quarter? I'm strongly considering putting off the calculus class for next quarter. What do you think? Any suggestions?

then it should look alright. i actually have no clue since i am a freshman as well, but what one of my smarter friends at la tells me, he took 18 units in the winter quarter (chem 14b, math 3b, and some other stuff) he told me it was hard.

when i asked about my schedule which i personally think is a bit easier than yours, i was told that i would "have to study A LOT"

microeconomic theory
accounting principles
physiological science: diet and exercise
introduction to computing
fiat lux

keep in mind you can drop later unless the courses are impacted... like some of mine

I'm not familiar w/ your north campus courses, but fiat luxes are always nothing and those south campus courses are known gpa boosters fastMEd, so that commentary must be coming from those 2 courses I don't really know about.

The OP on the other hand has 2 real south campus courses that actually requires studying, as well as a language course which is guaranteed daily work (and possibly weekly quizzes which is the case for most language courses), and a history GE that will require a lot of reading no doubt so the course load is on the heavier side. I'd suggest you put off on calculus like you suggest so you can probably adjust to the campus setting better (how does your finals schedule look? You must take that into account as well, because no matter how easy the course, the difficultly is compounded when you have 2 on the same day since just one can be draining, while 3 on the same day will cause you enough regrets to never do it again, and 4 on the same day is just plain stupid unless its out of necessity to graduate immediately, which still doesn't take away from the stupidity of it and shows a poor sense of planning and pacing).

You will not be behind and it will not be bad if you drop calculus. If you want, you can just try it out and drop it later like fastmed suggested.

And will this load be difficult to work with first quarter?
[/quote]

Usually, a first quarter load is not DIFFICULT, no matter how many courses you take. If it is, then you should consider changing majors.

The thing to say is how many hours you will be committed to doing assignments, reviewing, and doing homework. Chem 14A and Math 32A have weekly homework, but the subjects should not require more than 6 hours of outside studying per week. So you have to get into the habit of studying a bit each day, instead of cramming when assignments are due.

Fiat lux usually has either no homework, or just readings and a paper due at the end.

I have no basis for Spanish and history. I think that you would be fine, and your free time correlates to your aptitude.

The two classes you really have to truly worry about are Chem 14A & Calc 32A. TERRACIANO for Hist 8A seems like a nice teacher on Bruinwalk, so that shouldn't be too bad and language classes are pretty much instant A's if you do your work. Fiat lux is 1-unit so it requires not that much time, just attendance and a paper at the end I believe? Aren't fiat lux pass no pass anyway? Correct me if I'm wrong.

So yea, generally north campus classes - don't worry about them. It's the chem and calc that's going to kill your GPA - provided you don't count all the other college factors - drinking, partying, procrastinating...

Yeah take it easy your first quarter... there will be plenty of time to stock up on classes later haha. My recommendation - drop either chem or calculus.

I personally found Math 32A hard when I took it first quarter of freshman year. It didn't help that like 40% of the final was all-or-nothing multiple choice. I passed out of 31A and 31B with a 5 in Calc BC, but I wasn't ready for Math 32A. Oh well.

Most people with a strong math background transition well into 32A. The content is not too difficult - it is mostly computational/quantitative material. 32B is more difficult to learn.

I'm a biochem major and I only have to take 31A, 31B, and 32A, but I got out of the first two with a 5 on BC.. It also says that 33B is recommended, though not required.. Is 33B difficult, and if I decide to take it, would 33A be helpful course to take first?
