How's this for an essay topic?

So, I've been having a lot of trouble thinking of a worthwhile topic that won't completely bore the reader. The colleges I'm applying to don't require an answer to any specific question, so the choice can be basically anything.
I've been trying to think of something a little more out of the ordinary than a "bio". I think I have decided, but I'd like some input before I commit myself.

Right now I work for a defense contractor on 2 projects, one of which sends mechanics to work on the MRAP vehicles that help save soldiers from IEDs in Iraq. My birthday was in May, and I came into work to find an email from one of the mechanics with pictures of a birthday "card" made for me (actually a piece of cardboard decorated with a sharpie), and soldiers in Iraq holding the card, etc. I was thinking of basing my essay on how my job has connected me with our troops on a personal level.

Obviously it's a little broad right now, but does anyone think I could be onto something here???

thanks!

hmmm… interesting. I think if you focus on the social and emotional aspect of the essay rather than the politics it would be a very good essay. I’m not sure if you were hinting on politics so I don’t know if you were planning on doing so, but I would stay away from any political references these days.

I completely agree! I want this essay to be on a completely personal note, and steer clear of any political opinions. That’s what my main reservation in using this topic is, but I’m certain I can write it without having any political connotations.
