How's this junior looking? (MIT, UPenn, CMU...)

Hey guys! I was just wondering how do I look for schools such as MIT, UPenn, CMU, Stanford, Lehigh, Purdue, and BU.

WGPA: 4.516 (no one usually gets above 5)
Rank: 11/386
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White

SAT: 2180 (750 CR, 730 M, 700 W) (Retaking in September/October)
SAT II: 770 Chem

AP Classes: APUSH, AP Eng Lang, AP Chem (No junior in my school has ever taken it), AP Comp Sci A

EC's:

FRC Team Robotics (9-11) - 400 hours in 3 years or so. Usually places in top 3 teams every year. Head programmer of the team for this year and next. This year, our team got the Coopertition Award, Honorable Mention for Safety, 1st seeded team, and top 4 teams overall in Boston Regional.

Science Olympiad (11) - Co-Founder/Captain. Got 21st/40 in state competition this year, highest rookie placement.

MOON (10,11) - Math team. Treasurer. Highest in division for GBML competition (Greater Boston area)

Academic Decathlon (10,11) - A starter, placed 6th at regionals and 6th at states.

Varsity Swim Team (9-11) - MVP of the meet, possibly captain next year

Other smaller EC's

Awards:

National Latin Exam: Gold and silver medals
National Spanish Exam: Bronze medal
AMC 10 School Winner
Honorable Mention School Science Fair/Regional Science Fair Qualifier (3 years)

Recs: Will have recs from my Latin teacher who has written excellent recs for past students, and will have had him for 4 years, my AP chem teacher who has helped with MOON as well, and my mentor from my robotics team who I have spent countless hours with.

Reach: MIT, UPenn, Stanford
Match: CMU
Safety: Lehigh, Purdue, BU

^ Agree with the above. EC’s are pretty run of the mill and you should try and raise the SAT.

^ Agree with all except Stanford which I would say is a little higher of a reach than MIT or Penn. Yes raising the SAT will dramatically improve chances.

Try and take some more SAT IIs. Math II and Physics are two SAT tests that every applicant applying to those schools should have.

Yea, I plan on taking Math II and probably a humanities SAT II. Will raising my SAT score really increase my chances that much?

Thanks everybody! I’d still like more opinions though,
so please don’t hesitate

And I will chance back

one thing I’d look for is a hook - your grades and scores will be more than enough for the lower half of your listed schools, but the really elite ones you’re looking for want something entirely unique about you. Your ECs show commitment, but not really passion. You’re still an excellent candidate with a solid shot at all the schools you listed, though - I pretty much agree with everyone else haha. Just try to up that SAT too!

Please chance back

I am a first generation college student, but that’s the only potential hook I can think of. My passions are science in general, musicals, politics, and anything concerning Climate Change and alternative energy.

I started science olympiad in my school because I love science and I wanted to create an environment where kids would enjoy learning science and engineering, especially since the science teachers in our school tend to cause kids to not enjoy science as much.

you have a lot of great ecs
some more aps and an improvement on your sat score and sat iis should put you in a good place for these schools

Say Penn and your chances improve ten fold. =P

bump bump

Any more suggestions?

So far I got:

Improve SAT scores (I’m guessing CR is fine?)

Take more SAT II’s, prob Math and a humanities

Make sure to include/find hook

As of now your composite SAT probably puts you at the lower end of the middle 50% of students accepted at Stanford/MIT and maybe even Penn. Without a significant hook, I think it would be very surprising to gain admission at S or M without raising the score.

You may want to improve your SAT, though I have to say, your ECs show commitment and focus so I wouldn’t do anything to them. Also, I would get some 750+ SAT IIs.

Thanks!

bump de bump

bump!

Just a few more just to reassure the weaknesses, and I’ll stop the bumping.
